You think the schools in California just became better recruiters?

The NCAA is becoming archaic. Death pangs.
Whatever it takes to bring EA Sports NCAA Football back, the Mox is all for it!

Out of the thousands of college athletes in California not even 1% will get an endorsement deal or be able to make any money.

Probably 3-4 players on each team will bring in major cash and others will get nothing. Exactly how it should be, free enterprise at its finest

Your right, the scout team long snapper probably won’t be taking in anything. But take your 3-4 players on each team away from any non-California team and that’s the disadvantage. Take Johnny Manziel and put him at UCLA instead of A&M, then tell me that A&M wasn’t at a disadvantage and it was just free enterprise. Free enterprise works when things are equal. If I sell shoes online tax free in Missouri, and my brother sells them from is Illinois, which charges a 10% tax on online sales, then my brother is at a disadvantage. More people are going to buy them from me at a cheaper price for the same product.

I am in Nashville Tenn this week and the legislature is debating exactly the same legislation,,,,,,,It’s going to snowball nothing NCAA can do about it, their rules don’t carry weight of law

If the NCAA schools hadn’t been so greedy, this wouldn’t have happened. We are going to sell a jersey with your name and number on it for $40 and you get JACK SQUAT.

Agree - if I'm the dude wearing the jersey that they are selling, I should get something. I think common sense would say that it needs to be equal for the player at USC the same for the kid at Tennessee.

I think we are seeing the end of the NCAA as a governing body for sports. I think its only a matter of time before the bloated body is replaced with a streamlined one governed by the conferences that makes logical sense instead archaic rules that are not enforced consistently.

Lebron James will be the president of the new regime that takes over the NCAA. It is still 3 years away so we will see. Title 9 issues as well involved with this. I see Lawyers making millions in the near future.

I like where you are going with this .....Lebrons body is definitely more streamlined then Mark Emerts (Insert Doc Guy joke about Bosko's body below)

Colleges have never been able to sell jersey's with player names on them. However, they have sold the number of their best player for years.

Now, how much of the profit does each player see from said jersey being sold? Maybe players can negotiate this when signing their letter of content?

It's going to open a can worms that who knows what roads collegiate sports will go down.

The university doesn’t have anything to do with it. Each student athlete will be free to negotiate water every deal he can make with whoever wants to pay him for it the money won’t come from or through the school in anyway

Most student athletes name or likeness has no value and that’s what they will get

This law is really confusing to me. I mean is it illegal today to sell you likeness or image if you are a college player? It's against NCAA bylaws. The supreme court ruled years ago that NCAA is a private entity and can enforce it's own membership rules. So unless colleges drop their NCAA membership or the NCAA caves I don't see what this law really changes.

Let's say that NCAA digs it's heels in. They simply don't allow California schools to compete in NCAA events. How much is an athlete's likeness worth if they can't compete in NCAA championships or they are on TV every weekend.

I am with you, either I don't understand the new law or it doesn't really mean anything and is just a political move. A player is free to sell their likeness and endorse anything they want now. However they will immediately become ineligible to participate in NCAA activities when they do. The Supreme Court already ruled they are free to do this so??????

The California statute says that is against the law for the NCAATo bring any type of sanctions against a player for exercising that right

Who cares what The California Statute says? The NCAA is bigger. They are not going to allow schools from one state to pay players while others don't. I'm not saying they won't change the rules for all but I guarantee one on its own will not be able to. I think it's ignorant. Players are getting paid with a hell of an education..

NCAA rules don’t mean crap. They are not law in the state of California or anyplace else. Universities are owned by the states and pretty much have to follow state law

If I'm paid $50 an hour, but my production is worth $200 an hour, should I be paid more?

If you don't like your pay go work somewhere else that pays more. The CFL pays and has no age limit, there are all sort of independent leagues throughout the US, some pay a little. The NFL doesn't want you and NCAA is only paying $50. So unless you are willing to go play in the CFL you are only worth $50 regardless what you think your worth.

When all of the NCAA Schools get together and decide they are paying $50 it is called “A Conspiracy In Restraint of Free Trade” or simply Price Fixing

The NCAA and all the schools should all go to jail

The tuition is not the same at any two schools. If you are choosing a college based on a return then why doesn't every top recruit want to go to Brown, Yale, Harvard, etc? Maybe there is something else of value they get by going to Alabama and Clemson? Hmmm

Let me clarify one thing. I do think College athletes should be paid if they are not allowed to work. However every athlete in every sport should be paid the same. I do not believe that college players should be signing endorsement deals.

Why? The Heisman candidate quarterback would seem to have more value and bring more value to the university than the walk on backup long snapper.

If i'm understanding this correctly though it could also effect small schools too.I could see an O-line being able to get a free meal at a local diner or a star D2 player getting a couple hundred bucks to be in a used car commercial. I mean I think it could have a bigger positive impact then negative across the board, Giving small college players the opportunity to get a little extra for there contributions to the town. I think sometimes we forget most of the time the kids at the small schools work as hard as the kids at the large ones and see little of the pay off.

Agreed, until you come together as a group, or unionize, to fight for higher wages. Obviously has it's pros and cons.

The way I view it, the education you are receiving is the base salary, but to say that I can't profit off of my own likeness is crazy to me.

Tua Tagovailoa could perform just as well at Missouri State and wouldn't be know outside of SWMO. A large chunk of his value is tied to Alabama. I don't think he should be compensated because he happens to be on a bigger stage. If you want to be compensated based on performance go to the CFL. You could spend 2 or 4 years there, get paid $50K+ per season, then enter the draft.

So the Head Coach at Missouri State should be paid the same as the Head Coach at Alabama too?
