I get the feeling this meeting was more about a message to Egypt's political leadership under al-Sisi than anything to do with the Brotherhood itself.

The Muslim Brotherhood is one of the two major political groups in a major US ally, as well as a regional player in other countries. It is not a shock that the US would like to have a mutually beneficial relationship with them, but it is a little surprising to see public acknowledgement of a meeting with them at the White House. It has the feel of "we're watching how you treat these guys, al-Sisi."
