I realize it's fun to complain about Mizzou and such, but let's turn this into something fun. What do you think is the best football team your high school ever had? What year and why was it the best? This should especially be fun and difficult for the Webbies.
For Chillicothe, I'm going with 1970...undefeated state champions, explosive balanced offense and tough defense. This mid sized Missouri high school team produced four division one players off of this team for Notre Dame, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas, one of which was drafted by the Redskins but he decided to return to school and become a lawyer.

Trenton: 1966 (10-0, voted Class M State Champions)

Outscored opponents 415 to 36 (10 of those were scored by previously unbeaten Chillicothe in the final game of the season. The Hornets ended the season 8-1).

Trenton was coached by Dewey Combs. It was his final season at Trenton before leaving for Joplin Parkwood.

Scores:
Trenton 40 Savannah 0
Trenton 41 Carrollton 6
Trenton 48 Macon 6
Trenton 20 Kirksville 0
Trenton 48 Marceline 7
Trenton 55 Unionville 0
Trenton 60 Milan 0
Trenton 45 Brookfield 0
Trenton 31 Fort Osage 7
Trenton 27 Chillicothe 10 (over 5,000 fans in attendence)

Trenton's first undefeated and untied season in 20 years.
Trenton has not had an undefeated untied season in the 51 season since then.

Difficult answer for me. West Platte won state titles in 2001 and 2005. But if I had to pick I'd probably go 2001. That team was led by 2 division 1 players in Adam and Brian Barmann. Adam went on to start at KU for awhile and Brian went to MIZZOU and ended up transferring to Northern Colorado.

From everything I've read, that Trenton Chillicothe game was an epic one for the ages (Also last time Trenton beat Chilli until the early 90s lol)

1990....The Brian Grimes Game. Trenton 36 Chillicothe 20.

Trenton beat Chilli one last time in 1995 before the series was ended in the late 90's.

It was a great rivalry back in the day but time, changing enrollment, noncompetitive match-ups and conference alignment all helped end it.

For old Trenton-Chillicothe Alums 45 and older it's sad that we don't play for the Sugar Bucket anymore.

The younger generation could really care less. That in itself is somewhat sad.

I don't ever remember Pattonville being much of a threat to anyone in football since I began following them as a kid in the late 70's, 80's. They finally broke through in the 2007 state playoffs and won a first round game against Lafayette. The Pirates lost in the semis to Mehlville who went on to get beat by Rockhurst in the ship.

My hopes were highest in 2015 when they seemed to be on a Class 5A collision course to meet another team that I enjoy following - the Carthage Tigers - in the 4th round of the state playoffs. Pattonville beat McCluer and Webster to advance to a 3rd round matchup with Chaminade. The Pirates lost 20-18. Meanwhile, Carthage beat Nixa 48-46 in a game I attended in Nixa. Carthage traveled to StL only to get beat by Chaminade who went on to get blown out by Ft. Osage in the ship.

'01 Easily the best WP team I've seen. Don't forget Kyle Knighton (TE/LB), who played at Kansas. He had over 20 tackles in the state title game. They beat a South Harrison team in the semis that was the better team, IMO. And not just saying that bc OU812 is following this thread. :)

That team was really fun to watch. Great players.

Western High School in Macomb, Illinois. In '67, before the playoff system - went undefeated and unscored upon.

Greenfield - 1977 - had the undefeated Class 1A State Champions. First year head coach Jim Dykens, who set his own bar too high to ever reach it again.

Players included:
David McNeel - QB/LB who started and led Mizzou in tackles his senior year and went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Billy Andrews - RB/DB who was the nephew of Houston Astros Manager Bill Virdon.
James Reeves - TE/DE, flattened the opposition and went on to Missouri Southern.
Johnny Wooldridge - WR who had a father and an uncle in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

My most memorable play was Reeves taking a pass over the middle from McNeel is the semifinals against Cass Midway. The little CM safety was all that stood between 6'3" 200+ Reeves and the end zone. Reeves didn't even try to juke him - he just ran straight into him and leveled the kid. After about 15 minutes, the kid was strapped to a gurney and loaded into an ambulance on the field.

Kid turned out to be okay....and by the way made the touchdown-saving tackle too.

You're worried about a team coming out flat in an imaginary game? Relax a little...

The 2013 squad was bad about starting slow. Would be 14-7 or 7-7 at the end of the first before putting 28-35 on in the second. Thats also why they lost to cj that year. Came out flat and dug a 0-21 hole they had to climb out of

I gotta go with the 1994 Odessa team. I believe they won every game by 14 points or more. Fun fact, they beat Knob Noster for the title!
Wasn't that the team that had two great running backs? Both ended up all state or something? That was definitely a great team

Coach Fairchild told me once that when he interviewed for the Head Coaching position at Chillicothe, one question they asked him was "Do you think you can beat Kirksville and Trenton?" (The two biggest rivals at the time) Coach replied that yeah, the thought he could. Trenton won twice and Kirksville four times in his 34 years as head coach.

My pick for the greatest Harrisonville team would be the 1951 (10-0) Mineral Water Bowl Championship team. A team with a roster of 36 would send 8 players on to play college ball. Karl Lathrop (related to legendary Raytown South basketball coach Bud Lathrop) Kansas, Dudley Childress-Missouri, Robin Wright-Missouri, Gene Roll-Missouri, Ben Alburtis- Missouri, Miles Greenway-Missouri Valley College, Gary Sivils-William Jewell, Jack Lyon-Central Missouri State Teachers College. Shorty Carlile turned down scholarship offers from Missouri to be a farmer. Also the population of Harrisonville at that time was 2,530. Harrisonville ended that season with the most wins of the other 4 undefeated teams in the state.

1951 (10-0) PF 415 PA 83
Odessa 46-6
Ruskin 68-6
Lee's Summit 46-14
Center 34-13
Windsor 34-13
Grandview 33-6
Blue Springs 41-12
Pleasant Hill 37-0
Clinton 61-0
Higginsville 14-13 Mineral Water Bowl

Fort Osage - 2015 State Champs that beat Chaminade in state title game. Skylar Thompson was as good as any HS qb I've seen. I actually think the 2014 team might have been just as talented by lost to Park Hill on a missed chip shot fg in the final seconds in the state quarterfinals.

The 2009 team that loss to a very good Webster Groves in the title game(led by future Tiger, Ram and Buffalo Bill, EJ Gaines) was pretty salty also.

Your team has really been fun to watch over the last ten years or so. Those physical defenses that you have had during that time period were something else and that trend has continued last Friday night vs. Staley. If the KC area has produced a better QB than Thompson over the last 25 years, I don't know who it would be.

That SH/WP game was a great one.

Lots of talented kids on the field that day. As a coach, in all the games over the span of my career, that's the one I'd most like to have back.

It was a great game....just wished it would have ended the other way.

As an aside, with all due respect to the 07 Trenton team, that 2001 SH squad was most likely the best team I had the opportunity to coach.

I was more than blessed throughout the years with good, talented, hard working kids.....kind of makes me miss it.

KCHI, Trenton got him 3 times. 1966, 1990 & 1995.

I would guess 31 out of 34 is still more than acceptable though.

Valle Catholic has a storied history....but their greatest team ever might not have been one of their 14 State Championship teams

Back in 1966 (before MSHSAA playoffs) Valle also had a team that went undefeated and unscored upon...outscoring their opponents 535-0 during that historic 10-0 season.

LINK: http://mosportshalloffame.com/inductees/valle-catholic-high-school-football/

Valle honored the 50th Anniversary of that team last season with 20 some former players coming back for the ceremony including MFCA Hall-of-Fame Coach, Matt Haug who was the Valle QB of that 1966 team. (FYI, Coach Haug was HC at North County, Dexter, North County a 2nd time, and Potosi over his storied career)

I once did the matchup deal on Cal Preps
with the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 State title teams. It said the 2006 team was the best.

Don't remember that team but, the Valle team that beat class 3 champ St Gen in a rout was the best Valle team i've seen......and i've seen too many.

While I like to think the Robert Long led teams of the late '70s were better, the 2010 Macon squad was the best considering overall talent and playoff advancement. One could make the argument the 2011 squad was better since they didn't give up a point in conference play until the Centralia game, but only made the Quarters that year.

Robert Long was a stud however and set all kinds of records in college at Ft. Hays State. Probably the best football player we've had, at least in my lifetime.

My two cents for Joplin schools:

Best Joplin team ever: 1980 Parkwood Bears (Coach Dewey Combs), a close second according to Coach Combs would be the 1976 Bears 10-0 defending state champs and didnt make the playoffs. lol crazy huh. This team gave up 7 points in the regular season. btw that 7 points was against the Bears JV and a Glendale back that went to Nebraska. Team was crazy good.

Best Joplin Memorial Eagles team you have to go with the 1976 class 3 state champs. They finish 13-1 the one loss coming from cross town rival Parkwood.

Best post Parkwood\Memorial team. probably 1985 team, The first season with combined schools and Combs last season coaching. 10-2 season wins against Two top ranked Arkansas teams Fayetteville and Springdale.

Id say the 1980 Bears are right up at the top all time in Missouri

Not my school but the Kearney 03 team best team I have seen in my young life. Did they beat every team they played that year by 35 or more? I remember my dad saying no way they turbo clock Webb and I went home crying. LOL

Id have to say 2003 centralia, they beat regular season opponents 546-53. They would have beat all class state champions that year they were that good. Had they been a bigger school multiple players would have been d1. Te chad thall played double a baseball for the orioles. QB played at MSSU and broke multiple school records both at centralia and college. Rb walked on at Mizzou. line averaged 6'4 275 which is big for a class 2 school. they also won a class 3 basketball title with most of the lineup consisting of football players, almost won a baseball title as well. They still have multiple state records as well as school records as well. Coached by the hall of famer Erle Bennett who retired this past year. Still in my opinion one of the greatest coaches with just one title.

We lost to Trenton my Sr year 8-6. Grimes was a great runner with one heck of a line and fb. My head hurt for days! lol

2003 Centralia vs. 2005 Cameron would have been competitive. I'd have paid to see that.

2003 Centralia vs. 2003 Kearney ... not so much.

That team had Luellen and the older Madison kid if I'm correct? Both went on to play at Mizzou back in pinkels early years with the Tigers.
