Had a friendly discussion recently with someone about making the "playoffs". My stance is if you win the district 8 teams tournament, that means you have made the playoffs. My friend says if you win your first district game, then you are in the playoffs.
What's your take?

I've always liked the idea of playing 10 regular season games. In that season you play every single team in your district and the remainder of your games on your schedule you can just play whoever you want. The top 4 teams in a district of 8 would then make it to the playoffs.

However, I know this may cause some problems with travel. For example you'd have a team like Joplin where practically every away district game in the regular season would be a four hour drive to STL.

Technically I believe the "state tournament" aka "playoffs" begin AFTER districts.

Practically speaking I think many people, myself included use the terms "post season" and "playoffs" interchangeably - basically the point when the season becomes win-or-go-home.

I miss the good ole 4 team districts, with only 1 team moving onto the playoffs. I always wanted to see an 0-7 team find their stride and make a state championship run. Closest I ever got was Lees Summit West.

If I recall correctly, LSW started 0-7 and made it until the second round of the playoffs. Pulled a few upsets along the way.

You recall correctly. That was the first year LSW was open. I know they had no seniors and few, if any, juniors on that team. I knew one of the position coaches on that team and we visited often. I remember him saying they were just trying to stay upbeat and encouraging the youngsters by dwelling on the positives and addressing negatives without criticism. He also told me they were improving greatly every game and were becoming competitive. When they broke through and won their first game in districts, you can imagine what that did for their motivation and they rolled through districts. He invited me up for the first round game with Raytown South who was loaded with athletes and had beat them soundly in the regular season. It was a helluva hard hitting game and LSW prevailed in I forget how many overtimes. That was the inception of a fine football tradition at LSW.

I see the playoffs as district championship and on 16 competitors is usually the standard for playoffs in mshsaa

It isn't "making the playoffs" in the sense of earning something. It is in fact a playoff in game one of the district tourney. Playoff = win...play more. Lose and go home. If they actually limited the playoffs to the top 4 in each district, then you could talk about "making the playoffs." But just like participation awards...everyone makes the playoffs.

Its so much different its hard to compare in the historical sense. You could say you have to get past Districts, but, in reality even that is an extra round.
I have been using the terms District Playoffs and State Playoffs since we went to this format.

When I write about this, I refer districts as "the start of the postseason" since they're not part of the regular season. Problem solved. ;)
