The West Plains R-VII School District is pleased to announce Brock Kenaga has been selected as the head coach for the Zizzer football team for the upcoming 2025 season.

“I am honored and excited to lead the Zizzer football program,” said Kenaga. “Having coached in Missouri for many years, I deeply respect the tradition of excellence in West Plains, and I look forward to building on that foundation with our student-athletes, staff, and community supporters.”

Kenaga brings nearly three decades of coaching experience to the position. He began his career as an assistant football coach at Buffalo High School in 1995 before spending 28 years at Liberty High School, where he served as an assistant football coach from 1996 to 2020 and head football coach from 2020 to 2023. His leadership and experience make him well-prepared to guide the Zizzer football program.

“We are excited to promote Coach Kenaga to the West Plains High School head coach position,” said Dr. Ashley Cooley, Activities Director. “His coaching experience, passion for student success, and commitment to building strong athletic programs make him an excellent choice to lead Zizzer football.”

This surprised me as well. Wondering if he will bring in a offensive coach. I always though he was more of a defensive coach.
I would think he will definitely want to bring in an offensive guy. I heard a pretty intriguing name that would be a good choice for his OC. Curious if that happens

Surprises me. I thought he was ready to hang em up for good.

He expressed zero interest in the job to all of his peers and was on the “hiring committee” to find a new coach.

Main intriguing applicants that were interviewed were Greg Dixon who has been with the program for at least 25 years but whose family isn’t well liked by the AD or her mother(the school board president) and Jaelon Acklin who has apparently retired from being a WR in the CFL for 5-6 years and applied for the position. Maybe he was just fishing to see if there was an opportunity there with all of his immediate family being in the area.

The “hiring committee” then stated they didn’t find any satisfactory applicants and the AD asked Kenaga(who was very good friends with her late husband) to apply for the job and they hired him either same day as interview or the morning after.

WP definitely has a crime family running the athletic departments now.

Oh and I was also told last week that WP had reached out to Pitts(former DC under Perkins) as to whether or not he wanted the job which was a no. 🤣🤣🤣

I was told that Pitts applied and was offered the job, but then turned it down because his wife did not want to move to WP.

But who knows. It is a messed up situation no doubt.

That could very well be how it went down. I didn’t ask for specific details about Pitts when it came to that. Either way, he definitely dodged a bullet on that one. Good for him.

How long before Acklin is named coach at Liberty?

Welcome the newest addition to the West Plains Zizzers Football staff. Coach Jaelon Acklin. Coach Acklin graduated High School at Liberty where he was a standout multi sport athlete. After graduation he went on to attend Western Illinois University where he was coached by Coach Rocco which is now the offensive coordinator for Penn State. After college he has spent the last 7 years playing professional football. His first season as a Raven in Baltimore then the next 6 years in the CFL playing for both the Hamilton Tigercats then finishing with the Ottawa Red Black. Coach Acklin will be our Offensive Coordinator. With his experience and enthusiasm he is a great fit for the Zizzers!

This was the intriguing name I heard. Very interested in how that goes. His dad has been one of the best offensive minds around our area.

Jaelon will do great. Not surprised they hired him, we know the head coach would have been a step down from Wyatt’s playcalling. This will make it interesting.

Best of luck to anyone dealing with the AD and board in that town.

I heard he was gonna be groomed for a couple of years and take over Head coach. Did the same thing with his younger brother at Liberty.

His younger brother was the special teams coordinator for 1 year and was given the keys to the kingdom.

After how they handled Dixon through this situation, I’ll be surprised if he remains on staff which would be a shame after 25 years with the program.

I don’t think it bothered him to much. He’s talking about retiring. I think he has 30 years in.

It was the way they did it, not that it happened. The Tyrees have never been fans of either Dixon coaches and they haven’t kept that a secret either.

I think he’s still got a few left. He may just coach track for the next few years and then be done.

Sounds like a great plan on paper. But I dont see someone with the last name of Acklin being able to appease the masses there. He will have plenty of other options. More likely he gets some good experience and finds a job in a better place.
