Webb City high school a tremendous school district is like all other high schools
when it comes to athletics, with one huge exception its football program being
elite. Programs last 7 years. Girls Volleyball little above average. Cross country
average at best. Girls softball couple outstanding teams. Soccer is very average.
Wrestling few good individuals team above avg. Boys basketball pretty good this
year but history avg. Girls basketball one outstanding team other years avg. to
above avg. Baseball second best sport normally pretty good. Track few good
individuals avg team. So it is obvious there is a huge push for football where
expectations or to be dominant and the rest of the programs is like other high
schools not a huge emphasis.

I do not think it is fair to say that Webb does not put a "HUGE EMPHASIS" on their other sports. It shows that if a town, school, and group of people will buy into a program like Webb does. Then you can take those "GOOD" athlete in a game like football and be a "GREAT" team. You do not need great athletes if everyone is bought into a program and do it ONE WAY. That is why football is the best sport ever it take a whole unit to get things done right.

Nwalls - have you see their other sports. Pretty darn good. And I'm not a Webb Guy.

The girls softball teams are almost always in competition for a final 4 appearance. They are far above average. Same with girls basketball. Mens baseball team is typically very good as well. They dont win alot of state titles but to say any of those programs are average is a mistake. Its tough for a school with under 1200 students to compete in the largest classification year in and year out especially when private schools dominate softball, basketball and baseball. Soccer team is terrible....ill give you that

Wrestling team has some good individuals but as a team, they are not above average and for most years prior to the past couple years, were well below average.

Not a knock on the team or wrestlers, they just haven't had much success as a team.

I dont really understand what the argument is here. I dont think anyone has stated the Webb is just filled with supremely superior athletes. They are pretty solid all the way around and they play top notch football. They are very well coached and work extremely hard in the weight room and the classroom. They beat people with a team concept and sound fundamentals. To say that there is a huge push for kids to play football only there is ignorant. The coaching staff at wchs think it is extremely important for all of their athletes to be multi sports participants because every sport helps the athletes in some reguard physically. They have even posted links to articles about the importance of playing multiple sports on social media on a fairly regular basis.

TC is also huge on pushing the multiple sport aspect. Helps keep injuries out of his office

Between softball, baseball, and boys and girls basketball (excluding football) I would bet WC has been to more final fours than most southwest Missouri schools in the past 20 years.

WEBB had some very good teams just ten years or so ago in wrestling as well. Passley, Booth, Taylor, Davied, Smith etc were a pretty salty group. Softball has probably been in 8-10 final fours and has two titles in the last ten years. WEBB also usually has a pretty good swim team. As far as a push, its in academics. WEBB CITYs academics are as impressive as their Football anymore.

You people do realize that in almost every other sport Webb City is one of the smallest schools in the largest class in the state whereas the football team is in a class that is two levels down from the top.

I can't remember the last private school to win a title in Softball in the big class. What I can tell you is KC schools have dominated Softball for the last 6plus years

Cant find list of Champions but on MSHSAA site coach Walter Resa, WEBBs excoach (2007) has a Roderique like record 318-52 in 14 seasons leading ALL coaches in win % with a .859..

How is that possible LOL made up numbers, they are in the same Basketball district with Monett our current enrollment is 688, some on here are talking they have over 1200 how are the the smallest in basketball?

not exactly.. dont know about all sports but in Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Soccer, Track, and Wrestling they are not in the biggest class in any of them. Dont know about the other sports.

There has been a cycle when Webb was one of the smallest schools in their basketball district when they were class 5. They are currently in class 4 and have become one of the biggest schools obviously.

In track they were until it went to 5 classes last spring. However, is there any other sport where there are two classes larger in that sport like it is in football?

You are right, they compete against some much smaller teams in basketball. I believe the district contains the likes of Monett, Cassville, McD County, CJ. I think Carthage is the only larger school. I always thought it was interesting that in basketball they played such smaller teams. They compete well but certainly don't dominate.

My impression is that they seem to have an above average number of appearances in state in all types of activities but they don't dominate in anything (except football). They had a couple great basketball teams in the late 90s, and it seemed like they had some brief success again in the 2000s. Various other programs have had runs of success here and there. Generally speaking I think there is a culture of winning and school pride that isn't present in a lot of schools. I think a lot of it could be attributed to spill over from the football teams success... makes kids in other activities proud to represent wc.

If there was a huge emphasis on only football at Webb City, why are the football kids encouraged to play other sports? Most play basketball and baseball.

I can tell you prior to 1988 Webb City was probably more of a basketball or baseball school than a football school but since 1988 I think it is a pretty fair assessment.

I do think several of the programs have been pretty consistently above average to well above average so I think even if you took away football on balance Webb City would have a pretty successful athletic program.

Personally, I think, at the high school level especially, the mental aspect of the game is what really separates most schools in team events. Kids are kids no matter where you go. There are a couple of great athletes, but as a team, the consistent winners have a mental advantage, in that they are more confident that they will come out on top.

While Walter Resa was there, until spring 2015, so 21 years, Webb softball won 498 games, 17 conference titles, 16 district titles, 10 final fours and 2 state championships. First year they played they had no conference affiliation so 17 conference titles in 20 years is far from average, in all honesty, it's far from above average.
