Definitely one of the downsides to running a 4-4 defense. You put a lot of pressure on either your outside linebackers to run with receivers or you put your CBs or Safety in pretty difficult situations. It hasn't been too much of a detriment over the years though, as you said.

The quarterback hasn't been much of a threat when he is lying on his back but these new offensive wrinkles get the ball out of their hands a lot quicker and if the QB is mobile and athletic it ramps up the pressure on the defense even more. Nothing wrong with a base 4-4 I guess but didn't I see Webb playing some odd fronts too?
