WC 40 Joplin 41 final 42 yd field goal as time expires

Joplin played one hell of a game and Webb showed alot of grit and gave themselves a good chance to win . Props to Joplin . I hate losing to them but they have an offense that Webb has always struggled with. Go back the last 30 years and see how many teams hang 40+ points on Webb . I can only think of Kearney in 03 and Joplin like 3 years in a row
Webb has trouble against athletic QB’s and that’s what Wright is. Hard to be too upset over a loss like this. Especially since Webb could have folded tent with everything going wrong but nope, they fought tooth and nail. Good for those young kids to have this happen.

After game Joplin goes to mid field and disrespects the Cardinal....... teams come to blows.......do those flags have any effect on next weeks game for players involved?
If there were players from Joplin that were ejected, then they won’t play next week, but I doubt it effects anything if there weren’t ejections.

I think WC has now lost to Joplin 3 times in a row. Least it seems like I have heard that somewhere.

Speaking of Jerry Kill, I know he’s not at Minnesota anymore, but I got to see the Golden Gophers stadium in person last week when I was visiting some friends in Minneapolis. Pretty neat.
Got to see a big ole banner with Herb Brooks on it too. That guys a legend. I immediately recognized his face and my friends had no idea who he was haha.

If it was the Kurt Russell version they'd know who it was lol.
True. They also weren’t Minnesota natives. Or hockey fans so that doesn’t help either. I’ve read a few biographies about the miracle team and herb brooks so yeah.
I was in Madison for a few days after that. Just didn’t make my way over to their stadium for some reason.
I still think Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon, OH is the favorite one I’ve visited so far. It didn’t have the capacity of Fawcett Stadium or Ratliff Stadium out in Odessa Permian, but idk. I just liked it more.

Edit...I looked it up . Springdale Har-Ber scored 42 to break their 40+ game winning streak and Columbia Hickman scored 42 in 2002. So Webb has given up over 40 pts 6 times in 30 plus years and 3 are to Joplin . Bad matchup for us . But Wright was a stud tonight both teams will improve and it will be interesting to see if either can knock of nixa
That is pretty much my take as well.

Per the Joplin Globe the last team to beat Webb 3 straight times was Mount Vernon from 84-87.

I remember that well. The coach that beat WC the first 2 games then coach WC and lost to MV in 87.

I think playing Joplin right off the bat is a tough assignment because it was clear that WC doesn’t have depth on defense(yet at least) and on a hot night and a 3-4 defense there wasn’t much of a pass rush and he killed WC scrambling.

On the other hand it is a good way to be prepare a team for the rest of the season. I don’t think WC will face that same type of offense with a Qb that mobile unless they get deep in the playoffs. On the flip side WC will face teams with better defenses. Joplin has some issues there.

Tip of the cap to Joplin though. Since coach Jasper came to town Joplin has had a very solid program.

joplins passing attack is definitely above average...running attack is terrible. need to work the edge with renfro and wright on some pitch plays. keep trying to run the slow kid in the trenches.
Joplin new OC loves to chuck it, often put Staley in bad position b/c of his unwillingness to run the ball. When he has the weapons, it works great (STHS 2016 & 17), when he doesn't (last 2 years @ STHS), he wouldn't adjust. If Wright is as goos as he seems, Joplin will score a lot of points.

agree on the defense, not much outside contain. dupree getting behind the dbacks multiple times on obvious passing downs is another wart.

I'm not even that upset they lost to Joplin. At least Joplin has been relevant the last few years. It's not like Webb losing to CJ who continues to be horrible each year.

I am interested to see if the 2pt strategy hangs around or if it was just part of the strategy vs joplin. My thinking it was a way to given them an edge in the event it became another shootout. To a degree it worked and at least gave them a real chance to win. Overall Joplin offense was typical of recent years, defense made some stops here and there but wasnt terribly impressive. Webb looked a bit like I kind of expected, similar to the CJ game a few years ago but unlike then, this time they showed signs of life late. I'm sure they will be good with a few games under the belt. Wonder if roderique is going to lobby the coc to shiffle the schedules and get joplin off week 1?

id actually like that as well. let the two programs get a couple games under their belt.

I think week 2 is ideal. Had WC played Joplin in week one 3 years ago WC could have a 4 game losing streak.
That said I’ve seen WC teams take 7-8 weeks before they really hit their stride. Both teams though probably in the long run get more out of playing right off the bat.

Yeah back in 16 or whenever they lost to an average ozark team at home mid season. Ended up finishing pretty solid the last couple games though, then losing a close one to eventual state champion harrisonville. For that to be the 'worst' season in 2 decades is pretty amazing.

wc does always seem to hit their stride couple weeks before the playoffs. you dont wanna be playing wc on the road come late october early November. usually doesnt end well for the opponent.

The kid kicking off for Webb was a freshman ...I assume they didn't want to put the game on his foot this early but who knows . They went 5/5 on two pt conversations so that pretty well kept them in the game . Might have been strategic due to the swinging gate and trick plays or it may have been out of necessity

Webb City also gave up 42 points in a win over MICDS for a state championship in 2011.
