I know it was just one game but strange to me "hey, your fired but go ahead and coach one more for us huh". Maybe I'm wrong. Why not wait until Sunday eve or Monday am to announce it?

Not a Cubs fan or follower, but why did he get fired? Obv. won a lot of games, won first WS in history. I know they struggled on the road this yr. Did his message just get old? Obv he is the same manager he was all along. Just curious.

Time for a change, plus he was supposedly the highest paid manager in baseball at a time when teams are looking to cut what they pay their managers (also part of why Scioscia and Bochy are gone over the last 12 months per the Rosenthal article last week.)

I’m betting the number crunchers want to control every aspect of team and game management so they will replace him with an errand boy who will do exactly as the numbers dictate. The Whitey Herzogs and Tony LaRussas have no place in the game any more.

I kinda hope the Maddon to LAA rumors are real. I'd love to see him win with those guys. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I dig me some Joe Maddon. And I think he does a good job.

Maddon is pretty number cruncher friendly or else Theo wouldn't have hired him. He's beloved by the saber guys as one of the guys you should hire instead of a brain dead baseball lifer like Matheny.

TLR was also pretty innovative in his day! Whitey was also a darn good manager and GM at a time when the HR wasn't king.

I'm a Cubs fan and I'm glad that he is gone. I don't think there was a level of accountability held over his players by Maddon. He was soft IMO. I've heard that San Diego could be his next job.

I keep hearing LAA and McKernan and the boys brought up Philly yesterday. Joe in Philly, that’d be interesting...I get wanting new blood if you’re a Cubs fan. I just think he does a really good job. I’m not a huge fan of the trend of hiring someone that has never managed right out of the network booth. I’m more of the devil you know is better than the one you don’t kinda guy.

I mean, Matheny has to be the leader in the clubhouse. He’d be the guy to bridge them through this rough patch until it’s rebuilt. But if I’m a Royals fan, I want no part of it. He’s not exactly known for his handling of youth. Hell, I’m not really sure what he’s known for other than clubhouse Bible studies...If I had to guess, he’d be my guess though.
