In the video the foul takes place on the No. 5 of the 50 yard line. It is the left DE for DeSmet. I have a couple of questions.
1. Where was the illegal hands to the face call on the offensive player for Ray-Pec?
2. Was it even a punch, or was it an effort to get the guys hands off of him after having his head pushed back?
3. With all the video available at HS games these days should MSHSAA hear appeals to be able to make a judgement on whether a player has to miss playing in a state championship game? The official clearly missed the hands to the face call. Could he have interpreted what the thought was an open handed punch as the kid just trying to push a guys hands out of his face?

where was the punch? the desmet players head snapped back and the guy kept his hands up high. he swiped his hands away around the ray pec players chest area. i would of done the same thing. shame the kid cant play cuz of that. seems a lil ticky tac to me.

Agreed the ref missed the entire play. And the second guy in a skirmish is often the guy that gets caught. Your third point is the most interesting. I could see mshsaa withdrawing the one-game suspension only if the officiating crew agreed with it.

From the ref's point of view it looks like a swing and I can't say I blame him for the flag. It's not a Rocky Balboa haymaker, but enough to warrant a flag.
Take the homer glasses off and look at the situation with fresh eyes.
Better yet, take the test and pick up a whistle.....you'll see a differnt game.

how am i a homer...i root for joplin and want the kid to play. hard to see a face punch when the kid swipes right to left at chest level.

From the ref's point of view he didn't see the hands to the face by the offensive player. My question is if he can't see that right in front of him, how does he know the difference between a punch, and trying to get someone's hands off you that near tried to shove your head back?

NO way should be miss the state final for that. That guy had a hand in his face for the whole play. Ridiculous.

RayPec coaches should have pulled that player out of the game immediately and told their sideline to not celebrate a penalty when you are down 37 - 0 in the 4th quarter. Real bad look for the program. MSHSSA definitely needs an appeal process and that ref needs to be disciplined as well.

Dear refs, before you kick any kid out of a game, please step back, take two deep breaths and then have a calm discussion with your entire crew. Once that is done, assess a 15 yard penalty and go to the next play. Unless a kid is completely out of control and pulls out a chainsaw to dismember an opponent, let the kids play.

Everyone agrees. A flag on that play is acceptable. But kicking someone out?
No.

I watched the video before reading your 3 points. My first impression was "where was the 'punch'?". It looks more like a lateral/downward swipe to get R-P #70's hands off of him.

My next question is: why are the officials huddling together *immediately* following the incident. At the very least, one, if not two officials, MUST have eyes on the players during a moment like this to make sure no more unsportsmanlike activity occurs. Better yet, separate both teams and send them to their timeout areas. Once that is accomplished, huddle and administrate the penalty before resuming the game. But, sure as shiznit, R-P #70 very obviously and visibly taunts DeSmet #5 by looking directly at him and clapping his hands high overhead. That is unsporting behavior and must be penalized. Guess what....evey single official's backs were to him. Noone saw it. These guys aren't perfect, but they sure as sheet should have pre-gamed that scenario and had been prepared to handle it correctly.

If this video isn't used by MSHSAA as a classic case play for crew protocol and mechanics to learn from in the off-season training, then I don't know what would be.

Why is the official glaring back at the DeSmet player after throwing the flag as he walks to huddle up with the other refs?

Had a friend write a letter to MSHSAA two years ago to review the game film from (town left blank) to determine if the other team was intentionally cheap-shotting the QB on every down.

MSHSAA replied via email (I’ve seen it in writing) that it is their policy to not review game film.

That’s certainly a chicken exit IMO.

Raw, I think if the ref considered it a punch then... that comes with an auto ejection. Being an official and watching this play 50 times I can see both sides. I have fortunately or unfortunately had this happen in big games and I tend to think like most posters that you call a personal foul on both, talk to them and go from there. With that you might have a coach start raising hell because they know what they think you saw and want an ejection. Officials miss calls. It happens with the best in the NFL. Each crew has different tendencies. Some call every little infraction and some "let them play". Consistency is what I think most coaches want. Had something close to this happen in a Class 5 semi final game in St. Louis a few years back and just hit the kid with a personal foul and talked some sense into him. He ended up playing in the championship game.

I did 12 games on local radio this year. In those 12 games, a total of 2 kids were ejected. One kid landed a serious punch after a play had ended. He deserved to be ejected.

The other kid hustled across the field and peeled back on a punt return during the early second quarter of a game and had a defenseless player in his sights. He led with his hands as he was coached. But gave the kid a hard shot. The ref was directly behind him and thought he led with his head, not seeing his hands. He threw a flag, which was understandable, but he also threw the kid out of the game. This was a 2-way starter and captain of the team, who had worked his tail off for 4 years.

Not only did his team lose a close game that night. But they also lost a one point game the following week. That one call likely changed that teams entire season.

When in doubt, don’t kick em out. Ask for a second opinion. Talk to your crew.

Had he already been flagged for Unsportsmanlike Conduct?
He had not been flagged for Unsportsmanlike Conduct.... but there was jawing back and forth by both teams all game long. And only 1 other Unsportsmanlike was called. That’s it. I saw the play live while I was broadcasting and was unsure if they were gonna call it a punch. Then they booted him and I immediately said that’s tough. Kid is gone for next week. That’s a big loss he’s the #13 player in MO. Headed to West Virginia next season. Hard to see but as said above I can see why the officials saw a punch. Tough for the kid but gotta be smarter in the State Semifinal.

i can see where the ref thought it as a punch
Before Camdenton game I am sure point was brought up to Webb kids that Lakers like to mouth and get in your face, and the only response is to say “good play” and walk away from it
