Duck, the Cards traded for a guy who hit 56 HR the last two seasons and has 19 already this year!

...in the minors

Seems like a legit prospect to be doing that in AAA when he turned 22 last month.

Shipped out Marco Gonzalez for this. Cards had a surplus of SP talent so this is interesting. Seems like they wanted a guy with a high ceiling for power.

My gut reaction is I like the trade.

Also Carson Kelly is up - perhaps to remind us how stupid the Yadi extension was.

Sounds like a trade without a lot of risk as other pitchers have passed up Marco in the pecking order. Pretty high K rate for the new slugger. Perhaps he will be packaged with others for Stanton????..

Maybe Grichuk or Piscotti are on the way out and O'Neill will take their place

It feels like they built up even more OF. They have a lot there already - Bader is murdering the baseball at AAA.

Not sure I see the Stanton part, though. I honestly think the amount you trade for Stanton is fairly limited because his contract is so nuts unless Miami is eating loads of cash.

The Marlins are in a tough spot on Stanton because they put such low front-end salaries in the contract, plus the opt-out and his health history. Stanton probably wouldn't get a 10 year, 300 M contract if he were a FA - especially with short-term opt out on it. Why are you going to trade loads of talent for a guy who is, at best, worth his contract? Why not go offer $300 M over 8 years to Bryce Harper in a year and keep your propsects?

Miami would have to eat some money to have a prayer at getting the Cards to sniff on that OR throw in another good player with a good contract. Stanton might have to waive the opt-out. And they might have to eat a bad Cardinals contract (insert Yadi joke here)

The one thing I take away, from looking at the Cardinals contracts...we really don't have a big guy under a long term contract anymore in the grand scheme of a team with a $150 M+ payroll. I don't think anyone has even $75 M of guaranteed pay left.

It sure feels like there is room for a big deal. They've left the flexibility. Waino is done next year. Peralta/Lynn/Oh/Duke/Broxton gone. I don't think anyone other than Piscotty has a guaranteed year in 2022.
