Tigers Wrestling vs. Buffalo Preview

After two months of road competition, the No. 9 Missouri Tigers wrestling program finally returns home for a showdown with Buffalo. The Tigers (6-2, 3-1) look for their seventh win following a road split last week in Oklahoma. Mizzou defeated the sixth-ranked Sooners 18-15 last Thursday before falling to the No. 9 Oklahoma State Cowboys Friday night.

Mizzou has not hosted a wrestling event at home since the first-ever wrestling dual held at Jesse Hall in the center of the MU campus back on Dec. 6, 2013. Buffalo (2-13, 0-5) comes to Columbia, Mo. having lost six straight while still seeking their first MAC win of the season. The Tigers and Bulls have only wrestled head-to-head once, which occurred back in 2002 when Mizzou topped Buffalo 36-4 at the Cornell Duals.

No. 9-Tigers Blank Buffalo at Annual Beauty & the Beast
Mizzou won all 10 bouts for the third time this season

Feb. 7, 2014

RESULTS: Mizzou 41, Buffalo 0

COLUMBIA, Mo. - A week after a 28-6 loss at the hands of Oklahoma State, the ninth-ranked Missouri Tigers bounced back Friday night with a 41-0 shutout over the Buffalo Bulls. For the third time this season the Missouri wrestlers swept their opponent, taking all 10 bouts by way of two falls, three decisions, and five major decisions on the night.

At 141 pounds, freshman Lavion Mayes grappled through three periods notching four takedowns and two escapes before sealing his victory over Buffalo's Nick Flannery with a fall at 6:37. Mayes's continued success has recently earned him a spot in the top-20 rankings at 141 pounds, where he's listed at No. 19.

"Lavion (Mayes) knew it'd be a tough match and he knew he had to be smart against (Nick Flannery). He did a great job and stuck with the game plan, and when the shots were there he blew through them," said Head Coach Brian Smith following his team's third shutout of the season.

Freshman Joey Lavallee also won by fall in the 157-pound bout at 3:59. Lavallee defeated the Bull's Wally Maziarz for his 22nd win this season.

The first major decision came at 149 pounds as No. 1 ranked Drake Houdashelt cruised to his 17th consecutive victory and an 18-5 major decision over Buffalo freshman Ryan Todora. Other major decisions came at 165, 174, 197, and HWT bouts.

Freshmen Barlow McGhee (125), Matt Manley (133), and sophomore Cody Johnston (184) added decisions for the Tigers.

The Tiger's seventh victory came in front of a crowd of over 3,000 fans at Mizzou Athletics' annual Beauty and the Beast event. On the adjacent floor, Mizzou Gymnastics also came out victorious over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks.

The Missouri Tigers have a quick turnaround and will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 8. The squad will be squaring off against MAC conference foe Eastern Michigan for the second time ever, with the Tigers holding a 2-0 advantage all-time.

"In these quick turnarounds like we have this weekend, it's all about your mindset. Your mindset has to be `We won, but now we have to do it again tomorrow'," said Smith. "Eastern Michigan is a good team with some guys highly ranked in the conference. It's quick turnarounds like this that prepare you for conference tournaments and the NCAA's."

The dual will kickoff at 1:00 pm at the Hearnes Center.

Bonus Points Help No. 9-Tigers Edge Eastern Michigan 18-15
Head Coach Brian Smith picked up career win No. 199 as a head coach, and his 197th win at Mizzou

Feb. 8, 2014

COLUMBIA, Mo. - A day removed from a 41-0 win over Buffalo at the annual Beauty and the Beast event, the Tigers improved to 8-2 on the season and 5-1 in MAC competition with an 18-15 victory over Eastern Michigan. The two programs each won five of 10 matches on the afternoon, with bonus point victories from Lavion Mayes and Drake Houdashelt proving to be the difference. Heavyweight Devin Mellon won a 5-2 decision over EMU's Khodar Hoballah to power Mizzou past the Eagles in the final bout of the afternoon.
For the second time in as many weeks, Mizzou found themselves tied at 15-a-piece with Devin Mellon left to wrestle. Once again, Mellon answered the call with a 5-2 decision over Eastern Michigan's Khodar Hoballah. Mellon started the second period down and managed to shake Hoballah off the top for a reversal to take a 2-0 lead, one he would never relinquish. Mizzou's junior heavyweight rode his counterpart tough in the third to lock up over a minute of riding time, and added a late takedown for a 5-2 victory. Mellon topped Oklahoma's No. 16 Ross Larson last week to lead Mizzou to an 18-15 win over No. 6 Oklahoma.

"Devin (Mellon) showed great composure today. His opponent wasn't wrestling as aggressive as we expected and was trying to steal a win, and Devin just stuck with the game plan," said Head Coach Brian Smith. "(Hoballah) was hit for stalling early, and once he locked up riding time it changes the whole match. It forced him to take a bad shot and then Devin got that easy takedown at the end. He wrestled a good tactical match, which is tough to do in that situation. But he kept his composure and stuck to his game plan."

Mayes, tabbed at No. 19 in the nation at 141 pounds, put the Tigers on the board first. Mizzou's redshirt freshman put together an eight-point third period which included a three-point nearfall with less than 30 seconds remaining. His victory was his sixth major decision of the season. Mayes continues to impress in his first year as a starter, and looks to climb in the conference rankings next weekend when he is slated to face Old Dominion's No. 5 Chris Mecate.

Top-ranked 149-pounder Drake Houdashelt followed Mayes with a bonus point victory of his own in an 18-3 technical fall over Mike LeHolm. Houdashelt followed up an eight-takedown performance Friday night with six more on Saturday. His takedown at 5:42 into the bout increased his lead to 15 points, ending the match by technical fall.

True freshmen Joey Lavallee and J'den Cox both picked up decisions over their counterparts as well, at 157 and 197 pounds respectively.

Mizzou's victory on Saturday was Smith's 199th win as a NCAA wrestling head coach. Smith boasts a 197-90-3 record in his 16th year at the helm.

The Tigers will be back in action next Sunday, February 16, when they face the Old Dominion Monarchs. Mizzou made history last time out against Old Dominion, defeating the Monarchs 35 to negative-1 on opening weekend last year. The dual is slated to begin at 1p.m. from the Hearnes Center.
