The Great SEC

It was such a hilarious fit, and Bielema's response to it made it even better, that was one of many very entertaining bowls this year.

I think at some schools NIL might actually end up saving the bowl season, I've heard several instances where money poured in to incentivize players to participate. The coaches already have bonuses tied to them, if the players do as well and the alums get more opportunities to network and advertise at these events, bowl season might get back to some glory day type stuff... could be a pipe dream though.
I wonder if folks will start putting a bowl game stipulation in the NIL language. If I was a big time $upporter writing 5,6, and 7 figure checks, I would for sure want to see my player playing in a bowl game.

I am an SEC Homer being a huge Georgia fan. The SEC is down this year. There are a lot of good teams, but no elite teams. Any SEC team can be beat any week if they are not playing their best. My Dawgs have been very disappointing with Carson Beck going downhill from last year, receivers dropping passes, and less than stellar play on the lines. They were not as physical as past years and got exposed by Georgia Tech and Notre Dame. Texas will likely get exposed by Ohio State. I believe the SEC is not as physical as past years, which is a big reason the league is down.

Since 1990 hasn’t the SEC won as many titles as all of the rest of the country combined???

What does that have to do with anything in this conversation? There was a time in the recent past when the SEC was far and away the best conference in the nation. And if they had this tournament in those days the top 4 teams would probably have been from the SEC. Those days are gone for now. If the SEC is still the best conference overall it is by an extremely slim margin. I would tend to believe that the Big 10 is the best conference right now. But it is still close.

When the camera panned to Bielema just standing there with a $hit eating grin on his face I just died laughing. It was perfect.

I’ll agree, I didn’t watch many bowl games but the ones I did sure were entertaining. I’d be all for the incentivizing of them. They probably need to continue from a business model standpoint. That would be at least an attempt to retain some level of integrity and competition to them.

B1G is probably a bit top heavy. Hard for me to see anyone but the SEC if you’re looking full conference top to bottom. But agreed, the B1G top teams look awfully good right now.

I know this is a football board but when you say “far and away the best conference in the nation”….and it has been in football …. Yet when you consider what they do in other sports…. They still are!!!

Duly noted. When we start talking about conferences in other sports we will consider that. But this discussion is about football.

And being a FB board…..I still think they are more top heavy with good FB teams compared to others! Not many cakewalks … if any!!!

SEC is a traditionally very top heavy football conference. Almost didn’t have a team in the final four last year, and was represented this year by a team that just walked in the door from a conference they won(and relentlessly mocked)once in a blue moon.

Bowl games matter only when the narrative fits the outcome. Truth is, NIL has changed the game. Teams paying players above the table has really hurt the SEC, and that is hilarious.

Also, let’s not act like Bama hasn’t carried the water for the conference, for the last 15 years. Sure LSU and Georgia have been there, but Bama was the constant. That has changed.

Mizzou walked in and won the East. Texas walked in and owns the conference now. Funny how that all works.

Saban carried the SEC the last 15 years. Between 1979 and 2009 Alabama only won 1 title, 1992. Smart at Georgia may be the new Saban, he already has 2 titles. But with NIL I don’t know if SEC schools, with the exception of Texas, will be able to buy the best players.
