Stanton

I heard those two AND Reyes.
Reyes only included if Marlins take a larger chunk of the contract, but hey who are we kidding they are not getting Stanton because I don't think he has any interest in coming to St. Louis..

Thats exactly what Mo wants you to think.
That sounds better than we came in second.

That is a real possibility also. Take those 2 things and we might as well look to sign some pitching that nobody else really wants.

Giants will win this battle, since they are willing to throw out the prospects to take Stantons money....and take on Dee Gordon as well

Miami wins in every way possible then

You are right. Just what MO needs so he can tell everybody we really tried when all along he knows Stanton is not going to play for the Birds.

We shall see what happens. Giants would be in the tax then, too. And they'd still be way behind the Dodgers. They need a lot of help.

But they are just ignorant enough to believe they can compete.
To be fair to them, on paper, they looked pretty decent coming into 2017 with Bumgarner/Cueto/Samardzija starting 60% of their games and Melancon locking them down. Then Bumgarner rode a dirt bike, bad, blistered Johnny Cueto showed up, and Melancon only threw about 30 innings. The problem is that even if those guys were all awesome and healthy all year, this would still only have been a ~75 win team.

That was a really bad team last year. Sure, Bumgarner can easily be worth 3-4 more wins next year and someone like Belt, Pence, or Crawford can be a win or two better, but, sheesh, they were 25 wins away from being a playoff team even after considering their luck, and Posey actually managed to play 140 games. By all accounts, their farm system is absolutely barren, so they're going to have to buy wins in free agency. How do they get their payroll to what it would take to be an 85-90 win team?

Cueto supposedly is going to opt out, which I didn't realize in my first post about their budget, but all that does is create another hole to fill from an expected wins standpoint.

They have a lot of easy holes to fill like Matt Cain's spot, but yeesh that lineup is just dreadful outside of Belt and Posey. There just aren't a lot of guys you look at like, wow, you should be a lot better next year. Their roster is old. On top of this, they are going to have to spend some money to get the #3-#5 spots in their rotation out of the gutter without Cueto, because Matt Moore is toast and they didn't have anyone in the farm system worth pitching over the desiccated corpse of Matt Cain - their #1 pitching prospect managed to strike out only 4 batters per nine innings in over 100 innings of MLB action. I had to reread the stats to make sure someone, in 2017, couldn't strike out more guys than that.

If they luck into five wins worth of talent from Ohtani, though, this calculation would change a lot.

With every issue they could fix....another appears. Like, as it stands, they have the 2nd highest payroll for 2018.

And yes, Cueto can opt out. I see no reason why he would at this point. He's in a massive decline, making $21M-ish for the next 5 years. His agent should be fired immediately if that opt out occur.

Cueto said he will stay in. I misread it. There's $21 M of payroll taken up, but on a good player.

I'm not convinced he is in a massive decline. He had a weird year like this back in Cincy and bounced back. He seems like a guy who needs to get healthy. But the velocity decline is concerning. He's down 2-3 MPH over the last few years.

I don't see him recovering back into a solid pitcher. I get that the cost of pitching has increased, so it's kind of a wasted point at this time..... but that drop in velo is going to be the death of him. He will need to create another 6 pitching motions at this rate to fool hitters

He is a weird guy!

Anddddddddddd

Giants front office are meeting with his reps tonight. Likely means the structure of a deal is set and getting Stanton to sign off on an agreement

Yep I'll be glad to get Stanton settled so the Birds can move forward. I don't think Stanton was ever going to go to the Birds, but still it looks like another 2nd place finish for the Birds.:(

And why wouldnt he want to play here?
Great job Matheny.

Thats what they "say".
In this case I think I'll choose to believe they "say" as opposed to your way tooooo biased opinion. Don't get mad at me Ducky I just don't think Stanton ever had any intention to play in St. Louis and really don't believe MM had anything to do with it.

Whatever. Big name free agents havent been flocking to the STL. You can believe what you want.

Thanks for allowing me to my own beliefs. Reminder Fowler and Cecil were both FAs last year.:p:)

The demand for Fowler was???? Bahaha.
Cecil lost 7 games in 37 innings in 2016.
I didnt see a massive demand for his services either. This defense reminds me of the Trumpsters.

Dude is going to be a Dodger. And it's going to take a while. There is no way, NO FREAKING WAY, that dude is ever going to agree to be a Cardinal and live and play in St Louis.

And the cardinals know this but are going thru the motions to put on a show for VB and 3R. BSIB. Biggest suckers in baseball.

Don't know why I got mentioned Ducky, but I've been saying he's not coming longer than you.:p

I don't know why I got mentioned, Ducky is the one screaming for that big bat guy. They better find some pitching besides a guy returning from 2 years in Japan. They hit plenty of HR's last season, now they need pitching and defense, not to mention better base running. Maybe the secret weapon can help with both of those things. :D

No...but they're possibly driving the price high. You'd bitch if they didn't go after him too. It's what you do. And why I dig you. I'd have never wanted to play against you! Relentless. Lol

I am all for getting Stanton.
If they get him I will be happy.
If they dont and they decide to improve the club defensively with an athletic SS I am all in.

I am not a Wong hater. If he acts like a man
I can live with Wong.

Looking forward to Waino being gone.
I hope Reyes is a stud. But when he isnt
I will be in your grill because we could have
gotten huge returns from him in a trade in 2016. :D

Stanton isn't coming to St. Louis
I want Wong gone!
Reyes will be a stud and he and Martinez will lead the Birds to at least 1 championship
Waino will be a solid #4 this year.

True and True. Except maybe the championships. Not sold on that, but those two are going to be very good at the top of the rotation for a long time.

Lol. For Memphis? Dude, seriously. He can't get you out right now.
Im looking forward to him pitching to Bryant, Rizzo and Willy this up coming season. Hopefully Schwarber can rebound from the ACL injury and Baez continues to improve at the plate.

You guys need more Waino's:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
