Granted, I only saw Staley highlights from tue Truman game. But its Truman. I have seen Kearney. At this point I'd go -14 Staley. I just don't see how K will move ball against bigger more athletic teams. Has to be the smallest K team I've ever seen. Not particularly quick either.

Staley is really good. K got a nice win over a decent Harrisonville team. Just don’t see them hanging with Staley for long. I’ve got Staley by at least a couple TD’s. Too much defensively for the Falcons. Going to be one of if not the best team in C5 again.

I think Kearney's offense will be really good by the end of the season - the Soph qb is a stud, they have another good back, a strong receiving corp and the OL will be solid.... The lack of size on D is a serious problem though - I think the only kid over 200lbs is the mlb (returner is a good one); but they're just going to get pushed around on up front. Harrisonville shoved them around the entire 1st half; Kearney blitzed a more in the second. Kicking game is an issue this year too.

The RB had a very good year at lb last year - that's a loss for the defense (I'd heard that he & a couple other kids would play both ways quite a bit this year - that didn't happen last week, but it probably has to in order to hang with Staley.) If adjustments aren't made, this won't be a good game.

I have been advised this Staley squad may not be on par with recent ones BUT they have a gazillion players from which to choose..................I put the game in Pick Em although I also think the Falcons just have too much depth for KTown. Again I wonder, especially if this is not close, if these two play in any regular season beyond 2019.

Your observation about the kicking game is spot on, by the way. Still always a fun, fun HSFB environment ergo will attend this one Friday night.

Staley is large Class 5 with depth even some of the better C6 squads wish they had. I am withholding judgement about the Falcons making their seemingly annual State title run until I see them in person, though.

Here are my observations from watching Kearney in person last week:
-the new stadium is amazing. Well done by the school district.
-the qb is decent. I realize he is a sophomore but he only completed 35 percent of his passes. Hes got along ways to go before I call him a stud. Pritzel was a stud.
-the rb is a beast. Nothing more needs to be said about him.
-receivers are solid but run sloppy routes at times. Could get them exposed against top notch opponents.
-ol is on par with most Kearney teams. Not spectacular but solid.
-defense is a BIG question mark for me. They have to improve a lot on that side of the ball.
-play calling was better but still is predictable at times. I heard Grey is the OC now, is that true?

The stadium renovations make it an even better environment - very nicely done. I don't know what Staley has on O - but my assumption is that they have some size up front that will enable them to take advantage of Kearney being really undersized on the defensive front (that's my #1 concern with this edition of the dogs.) Kearney's QB is one of the better young ones that you will see - presence and ability to make throws on the move - that bodes well for the next couple of years (I view that position as an upgrade.)

Regarding the kicking game, the backup was solid last year inside the 30, he's not kicking this year, looks like they brought in a couple of soccer players to vie for the spot and they're not used to kicking (a football) in that setting. I'd like to see the kid from last year handle the short stuff and one of the soccer kids kick-off/try the longer fgs.

Even watching the webcast on my phone at Liberty North those XPs did not look good at all..............the soccer player angle explains that, thanks. All three of you who attended last Friday seem to indicate this may be similar to Kearney 2012. Had one stud LB (who is a SR at Mizzou this fall) and a relatively inexperienced, undersized front seven otherwise which made them a "shootout" team. That was Class 5 so perhaps that won't be as noticeable once they play the other area Class 4 teams.

Cannot wait to see the Soph QB! Agree that could bode very well the next three seasons...........

Yeah, Grey is handling the O/calling the plays (brought in a DC from Tonka - I believe)...that's likely to be a learning experience.
Perhaps I should have said "will be a stud" - that was his first varsity start a (as a soph) - his misses were earlier in the game, it looked like he got more comfortable in the 2nd half and hit a couple really nice TD throws in the 2nd half - in addition to the back shoulder throw for the TD at the end of the 1st. Pritzel came in as a Senior (cough, cough).

NEVER EVER read too much into the first half of any of these team's first game. The guy with whom I trade in-game notes was all over Webb City's first half at Carl as well. The second half tends to be much more indicative............and that gets even more evident when game 2 comes around.

Staley is almost a mirror image of their new biggest rival Park Hill: D is all set. If the O comes to the fore look out..............Friday cannot come soon enough!

Can’t agree more. That game between the 2 teams will be outstanding in a few weeks. Wish I could be at that one at Staley. I felt good about PH going into the year and the O showed up the other night, interested to see how it looks Friday night in Liberty

My weeks 6 and 8 are all but set in stone: Staley at Liberty North then Park Hill at Staley. Add in the Class 4 highway 92 rivalries ramping up beginning with Kearney at Platte County week 3 and it is clear (still working on fitting NKC in somehow) KC Northland football is about as interesting as it has ever been in 2019!

JUST FOR FUN let's try a Northland football ranking table (all classes):

1) Park Hill
2) Liberty North
3) Staley
4) Liberty
5) Platte County
6) Smithville
7) Kearney
8) NKC
9) Excelsior Springs
10) Winnetonka
11) Oak Park
12) Park Hill South
13) St. Pius X

NINE of these could sport winning regular seasons...............

My only change is I’d put Park Hill South last. They are rebuilding and are going to struggle all year. There game vs Platte County this week could get ugly. Right now I think PH will knock off Staley. They have a tough road to that game though, beginning with Liberty Friday, followed by Lib North, LSN, Ray-Pec (underrated if you ask me), Fort Osage, BSS, then the Staley game. Follow that game with Blue Springs. Talk about a brutal road for the Trojans.

Add to all this Ray-Pec will host Platte County Week 7. Gonna be hard some weeks to decide which games to attend!

St. Pius X moved down to C2 but their power level has really gone downhill IMO. They lost one of their "easy" wins when LeBlond went 8-man and the MEC could be a strong three to four way battle this year. Agree, though, on PH South. One game that will spark a bit of interest this week is, believe it or not, Raytown at Oak Park. The Northmen somehow won that one last year.................another of those mysterious Blue Jays losses the past couple of seasons.

Interesting that Grey is calling the plays on offense. What happened to the OC they’ve had the last few seasons? I think his name was Defenbaugh.

Their kicking game cost them at least 5 points in that game. Kickoffs to the 20 yard line? 15 yard line? Giving away points and field position won't work.

Saw Smithville at the Jamboree. Not ranked above Kearney in any area. K versus Liberty A teams was a wash.

I don't attend jamborees just flat feel most teams don't show what they have ESPECIALLY if teams on their regular season schedule and/or could be a playoff opponent(s) are scrimmaging with them. On that note, though, I thought you said K had the best D of all four in that..................now all I hear is how undersized and not quick they are????

K as a team is undersized. I notice it more on Offense. The D looks fairly quick. Coverage best in three years. Better D than Raytown or Smithville. Looked up to the task on Liberty. Shut down H in second half. A big athletic fat boy O can push them for a half. They had five tackles for a loss...hurried the QB a lot. Mostly 2nd half.

Heard it all from JN about Kearney last year until Smithville beat them twice. This is the year the Pirates take them down in week 3, Kearney's secondary will not be able to cover.

You have a strange memory. I wasn't picking K over Smithville last year. Smithville clearly had more talent.

Always love attending K games at Platte County especially the Pirates fans section bordering the Dogs. Cracks me up how the fans tend to spar back and forth.............if you can hear them over the PA announcer. My Gawd he is loud!

I like how they try to manufacture a rivaly. Not a good rivalry when one team has won 15 of the past 16 meetings.

Just ONE day until the Mean Green Falcon Machine arrives in KTown...........have what, for the past decade, has become torn feelings about this one. This one is, like the past two years, a zero pressure game for the Dogs as everyone expects Staley (and frankly should) to prevail. Very, very interested in seeing how both offenses, especially at QB and RB, look. I know both squads sport good returning WRs. Staley looks to have another of their patented elite defenses............will see how K's matches up vs. the usual massive, athletic Falcons O Line.

As both programs annually point toward winning it all am also going to see if I get "that" feeling about either/both. Cannot wait!

I don't mean to be Debbie Downer, but Staley by 21 to 24+. But that's just based on what I saw last week.

That may not be a downer at all...........if Kearney were Class 5 would be much, much more concerned about this one. If they show well i.e. make some plays offensively and don't get bulldozed like two years ago I will leave this one encouraged. On the Falcons side they must realize Class 5 looks pretty wide open this year i.e. if they stay healthy should strongly contend for the title. QB/RB play will be my #1 Staley "thing to watch".

And Staley's LBs, and their All State first team lineman.
