I'm not from the area but have began to follow Springfield area HS football. Usually the bigger districts have better teams due to enrollment, tax base, etc.

Genuinely curious to why Springfield has struggled fielding competitive teams. Would be curious to here opinions on why it is the way it is.

Worst place in the state for big school football.

Yeah it’s the cashew
Definitely. If the city became the home of Orange Chicken or maybe even sweet and sour chicken, then you would see a corresponding increase in the level of high school football.

1. Too many hot college girls running around that town--distracts young men.
2. Not enough competition around.

The basketball factor is a real thing. There just isn't as much of a football culture established at any of those schools. Kickapoo and Glendale have been pretty good at times but I don't know that I would say there is a big football culture. People in general care more about winning on the court than the field.

Nixa is the "webb city" of the Springfield area, the district people move to, typically has very high participation in most activities, often loads of athletes, and their fans show up at twice the rate of other schools for every sporting event from football to volleyball, to basketball. That school was ripe for someone to start building a football program and I think Perry is doing that.

I suspect Nixa's increasing interest and success may bleed into other nearby COC schools if not some of the SPS as well in much the same way I credit Webb City for making Carthage and now Joplin what they are. I believe there is plenty of talent in most of those schools to succeed at a higher level than what you see right now.

May or may not be related but I will say that those springfield COC schools other than Willard brought significantly larger crowds to Carthage than I've ever seen before. Big student sections too.

If Willard's band would have made the trek to Carthage, their fans would've traveled well, too. Darn good band school, darn good. (Of course they would've left at halftime)

The socioeconomic status in Springfield, overall, is not very good. Happy I moved at the right time. The schools are struggling to keep teachers and coaches at every level.

I would think some of the coaches out of the SCA would have good records?
Darin Acklin was 129-61 when he stepped down from Mtn View-Liberty a couple of years ago.
He’s with Ary at Mtn Home now.

Steve Ary’s career record at Willow Springs, Mountain Grove and West Plains is 182-95
Then he took his Missouri retirement and headed to Mtn Home. Good coach.
Current record including his 3 years at Mtn Home so far is 196-117, should get victory 200 this next season.

Billy Webber of Thayer was 173-95 in 22 years at Thayer when he stepped down.
Back to back semifinals in his last two seasons and coached the bobcats in back to back state runner up finishes in 2007 & 2008
