Next week we should have Warp/Jump/Hyperdrive if we just put more resources into the program.........LOL
This is the long game and I don't expect us to need to travel to other planets out of need even in my Grand Children's life time. But we will need it at some point and we cannot stagnate on moving forward with that technology. We need to develop it on our own terms as opposed to developing it because we MUST.
At this point as I stated in another thread we have 10% of the population living in poverty and as I am fond of pointing out most of that can be contributed to the character defects of those individuals as opposed to the system. So this is a perfect time to fund this type of exploration...as opposed to a time when it might be necessary to reallocate scarce resources from all to save the human race.
First we must develop technology to get to the asteroid belt...some estimate that the resources there are vast and expansive.
With private companies turning their attention to the riches of asteroids, the first trillionaire could be made in space. Andrew Glester explores the challenges of mining space rocks

Then you continue to push forward and outward.....Of course some private companies are planning this as we speak. Why because they know that they will make bank and could very well control gov. with that power.
Also the average Civilian who isn't tasked with actually flying or part of the flight group could easily pass the training if in good physical health.....Christa McAuliffe a teacher was flight ready on the ill fated Challenger mission... And Private Citizens have paid to go to space after her as well.
I mean how hard do you think it is to be strapped in a seat and ride a Explosion to space if others are doing the leg work in mission control and in the Captains Seat?
According to NASA you have to pass a physical similar to a Military physical must have good eyesight that can be corrected...BP not above 140/90. Among other skills....but the Average Non-Astronaut wouldn't need all those qualifications.
