The schedule has finally been released for the 2012 Dig for Life Challenge, sponsored by St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Commonly known as the SEMO Classics, 48 teams are entered in the annual high school volleyball classic and make it one of the biggest tournaments in the state. The tournament will be held Friday-Saturday, Sept. 7-8 on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University with two courts at the Show-Me Center (the site of the MSHSAA state tournament) and four courts in the adjoining Student Recreation Center. Notre Dame Regional High School will also host the tournament and provide two courts.
Scott City has won the tournament for the past two years. The Lady Rams, coming off a 30-1-1 season that graduated its entire starting lineup including all-state Katie Hogan and Mikah Simpson, defeated Notre Dame in three sets in 2010-2011 and Eminence in three sets in 2011-2012.
Tournament format consists of 16 pools with three teams in each pool. Each team in each pool will play all three teams in their corresponding pools (Pool A teams vs. Pool B teams and vice versa, Pool C teams vs. Pool D teams and vice versa, etc.). Pool play games consist of two sets played to a 25-point cap. Teams that finish first in each pool will advance to the Gold Bracket while those that finish second will play in the Silver Bracket and last-place finishers will compete in the Bronze Bracket.
