I went to South County Mall (STL) yesterday about noon. I have never seen the mall so empty. A few stores were still closed but majority were open. A few stores required masks. About half the people shopping were wearing masks. Only one employee in the store where I shopped.
I suspect the economy is in trouble until we have a vaccine. Even the minimal threat of getting infected is going to keep people out of the stores, or as I do in the grocery store, in and out of stores as quickly as possible. Retail sales are going to remain low, and thus stores will operate on a skeleton work crew.
With the uncertainly of a second wave this summer or the reemergence of the virus next winter, people are going to keep a tight pocketbook and save what they can until the scare is over. Local governments are going to go broke with low tax revenues.
I'm afraid things are going to get much worse for at least another year.
