Rand Paul: ‘You’d Have to Be Brain-Dead’ to Believe Killing Soleimani will Bring Iran to Negotiating Table

Paul said President Trump had ordered the strike after receiving “bad advice,” and asserted that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s policies regarding Iran would lead to attacks on Americans.

“When Secretary of State Pompeo’s out there saying ‘maximum pressure’ [and] ‘our goal is to get them back to the negotiating table,’ no naive child would believe that,” Paul said. “You’d have to be brain-dead to believe that we tear up the agreement, we put an embargo on you and we kill your major general, and they’re just going to crawl back to the table and say, ‘What do you want, America?'”

Paul previously suggested on Friday that the strike on Soleimani would lead to the further destabilization of the Middle East.

“Soleimani, like [Saddam] Hussein, was an evil man who ordered the killing of Americans,” Paul wrote on Twitter. “Yet, the question remains, whether his death will lead to more instability in the Middle East or less.”

Ridiculous

Because they wanted us to hand back over the Shaw.

why was the shah even there? Who put that dictator in charge of their country? Who overthrew their government to secure BPs oil, killed hundreds of their citizens and put a dictator in charge?

Listen I changed my post because I knew were you were going and you are one sick person if you think what they did to those Americans was justifiable.

I won't say what we did was right either. I have study it and Yes I know Americans put the Shah in power.

They had a democratic election. We threw out their elected leader and put a dictator in charge and he ruled over them for 26 years.
Understanding their anger doesn’t mean justification of what they have done.

I don’t want anyone else to die. Killing that General was revenge. It was justice. But it might lead to more death.

Do you think he was plotting/planning to attack and kill more Americans? That is the question you have to answer to understand if this was justified or not.

I am not going to, nor can I argue with you about that point, but those 52 hostages had nothing to do with that.

That guy was a bad man responsible for many American deaths. By taking him out I think we showed Iran that we are not going to let you fight a war by proxy killing us and yet you get to go unharmed.

All week the Dems have said Bush and Obama had many opportunities to kill Soleimani, What was funny this week when Chuck Todd tried to make that point when he had General Petraeus on, Patraeus said they never had the opportunity to, basically saying we were never going to have him on the X to discuss it. He would not go and say whether they would have, but he said they never had the chance. That was the first time that he knew of that Soleimani had set foot in Irag and they had credible data.

Do I believe or trust Pompeo or Trump? No.
Pompeo is in charge of diplomacy and is urging Trump to attack. He is acting like he is Sec of Defense. That’s not his job.

If I hear some of the presidents critics give enough assurances that the attack was warranted it will be a little more assuring. But I don’t think anyone can believe a word those two say.

That is not what I asked, but okay??

So only if someone like, let's say Nancy Pelosi, comes out and says the attack was warranted will you believe it? Hahaha okay man.

You do realize that Trump and Pompeo are not the only two that have said the attack was warranted right? Defense Secretary, Mark Esper, has said it was warranted. Actually came out with a statement saying why they did it.

CNN has you brainwashed.

Do you think the attack and murder of General Soleimani is justifiable? If so do you and your brothers on the right think we should now use a drone strike to eliminate Putin and Kim Jong-un both brutal murders that are probably planning harmful things to Americans.
Also do you and the other rightys see anything wrong with your cult leader not believing our intelligence community about Russian interference in our elections now he sites their great work in learning about Soleimani. You guys are cowards to stand up to him when he's wrong, and you are in bed with the cowards in the House and Senate.

What Paul said is accurate but not convicting. No, this doesn't make negotiations more likely but I don't know of anything short of giving them what they want (Obama style) would.

The fact that he has the blood of hundreds of American lives on his hands, yes I do.

Do Putin or Kim Jung-Un have American blood on their hands?

SadButTrue your problem isn't with the right wingers, its with yourself. Your last sentence proves it. A civil dispute and then you just throw out a toxic last sentence. You are the exact reason why Trump won in 2016.

How many Americans do you have to kill before it would be justifiable in your eyes, or would it ever be? This man is responsible for many deaths. Was it Justifiable for us to kill Bin Laden?

I did a google search I wanted to get away from all the nonsense that is being put out today, So here is a link to interesting piece the New Yorker Wrote on him in 2013. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/09/30/the-shadow-commander

Here is another study of him. https://ctc.usma.edu/qassem-soleimani-irans-unique-regional-strategy/

Suleimani took command of the Quds Force fifteen years ago, and in that time he has sought to reshape the Middle East in Iran’s favor, working as a power broker and as a military force: assassinating rivals, arming allies, and, for most of a decade, directing a network of militant groups that killed hundreds of Americans in Iraq. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has sanctioned Suleimani for his role in supporting the Assad regime, and for abetting terrorism. And yet he has remained mostly invisible to the outside world, even as he runs agents and directs operations. “Suleimani is the single most powerful operative in the Middle East today,” John Maguire, a former C.I.A. officer in Iraq, told me, “and no one’s ever heard of him.”

Have you not read any of my replies to your previous questions? I have listed example after example of Trumps lies. I am not going to believe him or anyone who works for him on any topic without hearing it from someone credible, as in, his opposition. I seldom watch CNN or MSNBC. Their primary goal is to force moderate Dems down my throat.

Anyone who has killed American soldiers should die. That doesn’t mean I have to swallow what Trump and Pompeo are feeding us.

I am a man without a party. Dems say they want money out of politics then have lavish fundraisers and take boatloads of corporate cash. Repubs take the money but at least they don’t act like they don’t.

I want to just ignore all of this crap, but I have investments, kids, and grandkids so it’s too damn important. Right now kids are growing up thinking it’s cool to act like Trump and to lie, cheat and steal. And we could survive it except repubs in congress and mosports posters are not calling him on it. It has been normalized.

I told you what I think. If someone who opposes Trump says that the man (who deserved to die during the Bush Admin) was planning attacks on Americans and can show some evidence then I would understand that this move might be worth the risk. I can’t figure out what you are looking for.

Why does it have to be someone who opposes Trump?

You do realize that Trump is the one getting briefed on all this stuff first before he makes the call on things, right? The US had intel of the whereabouts of Soleimani at a given time and that he was actively planning attacks against American's. That intel was brought to Trump about what they should do.

He didn't just wake up and decide, "Hey, let's drone strike Solemani today because I think it would be fun."

The reading I have done said that Trump was given several options with killing the general being the most drastic. He chose the biggest splash. I would say, why don’t we wait 6-12 months and see what transpires instead of giving Trump a feather for his cap. If you believe like I do that the Iran agreement was a good thing and things were more calm than they had been in years, then you would be fearing the worst. Reneging on that deal was a terrible move.

Cheney lied to us and it cost us a trillion bucks and thousands of lives were ruined in Iraq. Starting a war with Iran is a tragedy.
All war is a tragedy.

The US has halted several operations including ISIS related action to deal with this situation now. Unintended consequences over the next year will tell us a lot.

I have to agree, And after doing some digging and getting away from all the leftiest rightiest bullcrap news stories out there and finding out more about this man I truly believe we were justified and I think Obama would have done the same had he been able to line him up on the X, he did take out one of his lieutenants and that is what the New Yorker Piece was based on.

I don't want another war and I hope this does not come to that. But the way they (Iran) was using Soleimani to wage a terroristic, proxy, call it what ever you want type war against us and yes it is a war against us, I don't think they have the stomach to take us on head to head and I don't think that is what they want. And truthfully because Trump is not really into diplomacy I think they will be very careful how they move forward.

As for investments, I think we all have investments, but lets be real most people on both sides are not calling out either party and most are afraid to because then their own party will turn on them. Are any Dems going hey this man is responsible for hundreds of American Deaths before we condemn it because it was Trump who acted we need to look at this.

We are all so divided and divisive it is hard to look past the screaming and shouting and come to some sort of agreement on things. I was watching the news the other day and a Young person was talking, I liked what he had to say about corporations and the environment he sounded so knowledgeable, and as they got to the end of the story, they said and what party do you represent he said Republican and from listening to him I would have guessed Democrat. They asked if dreamed about running for congress and he said man never. They asked why and he said because if he did work with the Dems on some of these issues that are important to me and this country he believed he would be voted out. He said today it seems you need to be either strongly on one side or strongly on the other there is no middle ground. Both parties think right now middle ground is for the weak.

By the way Bernie has taken the lead in most polls.

Waiting 6-12 more months would’ve guaranteed the killing of more Americans.

Something that you want to end.

I’m still wondering why you need someone that opposes Trump to come out and say that this was justified. You can’t just trust them? I think they have done their homework on this and have the American people’s safety at the top of their list.

I misread that, my apologies. I completely agree to see what transpires and not to put the feather in the cap too soon.

But I think as Americans, we'd be foolish to think that the leaders of this nation (no matter Dem or Rep) don't have the American people's safety at the utmost importance.

Its going to be pretty difficult to defend Agent Orange as tonight’s bombings are the worst conflict between Iran and the U.S. in the past 40 years.

Well as of now, no KIA's. And the bases they launched these bombings on house both American and Iranian troops.

No one is upset about him dying. And you know it. Being a turd and saying that just pisses people off doesnt improve the discourse. Everyone with an IQ above 80 is concerned with the Iranian response and Trump’s potential escalation.
