If you redshirt an 8th grader are they banned from school competition for their 2nd 8th grade year?

Yes. They have two years of junior high ball once they enter 7th grade.

What if they didn' t play 7th grade (as it is not offered at the school.)?

I don’t think they would be eligible. MSHSAA has its handbook online if you want to look it up.

This is why I always pushed for the 5th grade redshirt.

Ok, I checked the MSHSAA handbook. Students are eligible for one season each grade the first year they are enrolled in that grade. So, the way I read it, if you retook 7th grade as a“ redshirt”, you could play in the first year they were enrolled in 8 th grade. You couldn’t play two years as a 7 th grader, and you could not play two years as an 8 th grader...
