MSHSAA would never support a plan like this because it makes too much sense.

This isn't a fix, it's just easier way for Webber, Kirkwoods, Blair Oaks and the Blue Springs of the world to win titles. They recruit as well. A lot of empty apartments being rented out in those areas if ya know what I mean.

I copy and pasted this from the stltoday forum site

1. Undue Influence is hard to prove, once families understand that their son or daughter will be the one to bear the brunt of the punishment as well the get very very quiet.

2. Scheduling for the private schools will be a continued problem. It does not help that Illinois and Missouri are on opposite 2 year cycles making filling 1 year holes difficult. CBC from what I have heard is looking at many of the SWC schools on the East side but are trying to avoid a bye. Rumors persist that Trinity is matching up with SLUH and Chaminade. So scheduling is getting more creative. Much of the scheduling is likely done for the next cycle but won't be put on MSHSAA until after the season.

3. The forfeit issue is one that is going to force schools into a different mind set of scheduling and financial agreements. We saw it last year in the playoffs also with some teams not wanting to play those 1 v 8 matchups. It is a sad state that a once proud program like Priory felt it needed to forfeit to Lutheran North. Lutheran North has been a traditionally strong program going back the the late 70's. They had their bumps and they have had a large minority population going way back. During the 80's and 90's the old ABC league was a gauntlet. Priory, MICDS, Burroughs and Lutheran North were all really strong if not dominate programs. All have won state championships. Priory was a semi finalist in 2009 and won a playoff game as recently as 2015. Their fall from grace is significant.

4. There is an amazing article that kids and coaches should read. It is about an 8 man team here in Missouri that got crushed by a 100 + points.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2738 ... 102-0-loss

5. Unfortunately I think High School Football is slowly dying. There are not as many kids to go around and the ones who are out there want to play for good coaches and in good programs. I can't fault that. I don't know Coach Reed, but I do know Coach Patterson a bit. By all accounts these are good coaches who care about their players. The have helped their kids get noticed and recruited. Not all high school coaches do that or do it well. I think a lot of the traditional thinking looks down on some of the social media promotion, but these kids have opportunities that maybe would not have been there before.

6. If Trinity wins the district I give them a strong chance at beating Lamar this year because they got experience it last year. I am not sure Lutheran North will be in the same boat. It will come down to preparation and coaching. Coach Patterson has seen what needs to happen. Just an opinion.

Just some thoughts. I think discussion is great and enjoyable, but keep it all in perspective. Most of us can't change much. MSHSAA would need to get involved and they have shown a desire to steer clear.

Well said.
he article about the 8 man team is really a great article.

IMO HS Football in Missouri is dying a slow death.
This has been the case for some time now.
Back in the late 80's and early 90's teams outside of St Louis County and not in the busing program got the shaft. Our team played Lafayette in the second round of the playoffs when I was a Junior, we had 45-50 kids on our team and our HS was one of the largest HS in the state, Lafayette rolled out 78 kids on their varsity team for that game, 38 white and 38 black, as was the rules with the desegregation program. We got absolutely throttled. The next year we played Melville in the first round of the playoffs, several kids on the Melville team played at Lafayette the year before.
Duchense, Chaminade, Rockhurst, and CBC where all opponents of our teams in my 3 years of varsity play all teams that recruited heavily.

The State was close to splitting the public and private schools 20+ years ago, and IMO this is exactly what needs to happen.
The busing program is coming to an end and by splitting the private and public school divisions for the playoffs will essentially end the two sets of rules that MSHSAA seems to be working with now.

By breaking out the private and public school division you will be able to reduce the number of classes in football to 5.
Your district games need to be sprinkled through out the year and include 4 district games.
The current multiplier that is used for private vs public schools in a joke.
Since 2010
13 teams that are either desegregation schools or private schools have played in the finals in 5 & 6A
That is an absolute joke and clearly teams playing by different rules the the other 80% of the schools in Missouri.
if you are not going to open recruiting and simplify transfer rules for all schools you need to split the divisions.

Response

Im pretty sure your wrong. The vote was never close about seperating private and public.

Second mshsaa was founded by public and private schools. It has no relation to the public school system. If they were to seperate the private schools should ask for half the share of what mshsaa is worth right now and start their own association. Make their programs like a feeder program for colleges and their own rules about recruiting ect. You now actively recruit from anywhere.

Third. Make that new private association open to any school wanting to join. Public/private. I gurantee you there will be public schools who would drop mahsaa and join the new association. Great athletes like to compete against other great athletes. Great schools like to compete against like minded schools. But now since those public schools arent affiliated with mshsaa and the new association allows for recruiting, those public schools could recruit from other public schools.

And there. Now you can have your one association who tries to breed great athletes and who just like to go compete and the others who worry about whats fair and not fair and cry a bit, and you all can play for that state championship without the best athletes, But we sure wont have to hear anymore freaking crying year after year

I really believe some people think mshsaa is part of the public school system

I'll be honest, if the name "Academy" showed up at the end of the school I wasn't always sure if they were private or charter. If the charters get their kids based on a "lottery", I wouldn't be opposed to tossing them in with the private schools, but they're definitely a grey area.

Being ranked in the Large Private Schools Top 10 might not feel too prestigious. But even the worst two schools would know they were at least top 12.

Big problem with this. What do you do with St. Joseph Christian and Sacred Heart in 8-man?
You keep them the same. The 1.35 has been a joke especially to very small schools. Sacred Heart has a group of senior basketball players this year that are very athletic. I do not think they will have that talent next year,

Typical private school thinking. 10% of the schools would get 50% of MSHSAA's value upon breakup. And, who would give a hairy rat's tail end if they started their own association?

Third. Make that new private association open to any school wanting to join. Public/private. I gurantee you there will be public schools who would drop mahsaa and join the new association. Great athletes like to compete against other great athletes. Great schools like to compete against like minded schools. But now since those public schools arent affiliated with mshsaa and the new association allows for recruiting, those public schools could recruit from other public schools.[/QUOTE]

And..............................who cares? At least the remaining public school kids would be on a level playing field and would no longer have to witness the endless chest thumping from privates telling publics to not whine or complain, just work harder and get better. Anyone that isn't myopic knows that is a big bunch of bull manufactured fertilizer and a total red herring.

Now you can have your one association who tries to breed great athletes and who just like to go compete

Sadly, you can tell that he/she really believes this.

I really believe some people think mshsaa is part of the public school system

I really believe some people think privates should have unfettered rights to recruit and publics should just take it.

Just put a ridiculous multiplier on them and they bump up. To me it seems that the teams lower classes (not named Lamar) are the ones that have issues. Put a 2.75x multiplier and Valle goes to class 2-3, Lutheran North, Trinity, Burroughs would be class 4 and then Harrisonville and Webb City could handle all those teams that recruit.

What will constitute a private school? Will it be a school that charges a tuition? or will it it be a school that can accept and/or recruit students from outside a set boundary? if the latter, you need to include all magnet schools and districts that have intra district open enrollment. like st. joe mo. and a few others

How about the districts that lose their certification. those students are free to go the adjacent districts.

How about the kids from KCK that go across the river to Park hill, or the kids that live in grandview dist. but somehow go to LSW, or everything that goes on in NKCSD with Staley. or the "move-ins" in the rural towns of NM MO

How about the schools that don't have sound academic, attendance or behavior requirements to play? shouldn't everyone be on a level playing field? I bet Valle or Rock have a pretty good system in place, everyone should adopt theirs.

Yes they will, they'll go out and find them.

I personally would love to see a separate playoff system for private schools and 2 divisions seems adequate. Doubt it will ever happen but I think it's a good idea.

The 1.3 multiplyer is silly in my opinion. It's as if MSHSAA is acknowedlging an unlevel playing field, but won't implement any meaningful countermeasure.

It's also worth tossing into the discussion that not all private schools focus on athletics and recruit to build strong teams. There are 3 private schools in Joplin and I virtually never hear anything about their teams.

So there isn't necessarily parity even among private schools because some will operate basically the same as a middle of the road public school and just play it as a fun game with whatever walks in the door. Others will invest in highly talented coaching and athletic scholarships and recruiting.

It's a given that these schools are not established for purpose of building elite athletics. That would have to be a small part of their agenda. I would venture a guess that most of them have VERY STRICT academic guidelines. Guidelines that would make bringing in a busload of kids for the purpose of elite athletics rather difficult. IF they stuck to their academic guidelines. I have two kiddos ... one of them would have done well academically in that atmosphere. The other wouldn't have. Sports aside. Kudos to the schools public AND private who don't break or bend those rules.

Why would Private Schools stay with MSHSAA's organization if they were going to be separated? Why not start their own organization and invite whoever wants in to be in. You do realize, there are plenty of public schools who do already and would love to recruit. But things aren't fair, and my child deserves to be #1, but thats just the typical public school way of thinking.

excellent point on the Joplin Private schools, and you can also look at Springfield's Catholic they have a larger area to pull kids from, yet they are not building those sort of teams year in and year out.

Being from rural SWMo you just don't see the recruitment of players. You can ask Revno if you grew up green you will usually stay green, if you grew up purple you stay purple about the only thing that changes that is marriage. We have a lot of small towns around us but for the most party people stay pretty loyal to their colors. That old beach boys song be true to your school always comes to mind LOL.

But I digress, and guess this just seems to be more of a St Louis area issue. The complaints you hear coming from KC area fans is usually they are building another public school how will the boarder be drawn and how will it affect the other schools sports. When was the last time St Louis invested in their public schools like the rest of Missouri? Asking because I just don't know, not from that area, but Private schools seem to dominate around there, so that makes me think the public schools are in worse shape then the rest of Missouri.

I don't care who you are but that was funny. But I assure you outside St. Louis or KC, almost all private school students come from the working class.

And the thing about it is...almost more recruitment in the st. louis area goes on in the public schools.

It's not that private (or public) schools actively recruit kids for sports. It's more kids parents want their kid to go to a school with good programs and legally actually move into that school district or do the shenanigans of renting an address in school district but not live there.
