Principals vote 13-2 to allow Joplin to enter Central Ozark Conference

OK, did the math. If you take joplin out of the mix The OC average enrollment is 1,373. The average enrollment for the Large COC is 1,318.

Does seem odd that Joplin will be playing against smaller schools in general...in truth Joplin needs to be playing bigger schools more often to become competitive in C6.

Also it looks like this move is going to destroy the COC small or at least some of the teams in it will want to leave. The C3 and C2 squads playing up almost every game will not be a good thing long term.

wont really have an effect on the COC small... it was already seeing defections before this happened.. since they have not cross divisions for years, it wont make a difference at all.

The COC and OC are both basically Class 5 conferences now with one Class 6 school and 2 or 3 Class 4 schools.

It obviously benefits Joplin most with the travel but now if you are in Webb City, Carl Junction,Carthage or Neosho you have one more conference opponent that is within 30 minutes. That might not be a huge deal in football but it is for sports all across the board.

The problem with that is the amount of travel that would require. They are only one of two c6 schools in this entire corner of the state. That was a reason some were suggesting going back to two high schools instead of rebuilding the large consolidated one. Splitting would have created two schools comparable to other nearby schools.

I still think it would be better if Joplin split into 2 schools again but it is very apparent that ship has sailed for at least the forseeable future.

My point was the COCsmall already had a imbalance of size...with Bolivar,Marshfield, and Rog. being significantly larger than Buffalo,Hollister and Catholic, hence the talked about defections. Now some of those schools are actually defecting so will the smaller COClarge schools fill that void...Neosho and Webb. are the smallest CocLarge schools will the drop down...or will the CoCsmall play on with fewer teams? Or Fold completely?

And don't the schools cross division in other sports?

There may be a few that play.. but in those rare instances, they are none-conference games... there is no organized cross division in any sports any longer. That ended quite a while a go. There will be no drop down.. In reality they are two totally different conference, really share the name only, if you want to get down to it. As far as what will happen? No one seems to be quite sure. It will be a interesting time the next few weeks, as they try to work things out for the future.
