Pretty good year for….

2006 34-27 over Marionville in OT.
That’s right! I remember now. Lee Flood played that entire game on a separated shoulder at RB for Marionville. He was the real deal.
I just remember being amazed by his balance and lateral movement when running the ball. Was one of the most impressive small school RBs that I’d seen in person at that time.

Never got a chance to cover a game Lee Flood played in or watch him play in person, but have been told as many stories about him and his play than many of the other standout players in Southwest Missouri.

There are some folks from McAuley who still are upset with Marionville about the final scores from some playoff games back then.

Nick Smart was probably the one athlete from Marionville I remember the most … all he did was quarterback them to the state championship in 2003 rushing for 177 yards in the 19-0 victory over Princeton. Then helped the basketball team to the state championship game as a point guard and qualify for state in track and field.

Believe he was all-state in three sports and then went to Southwest Baptist where he played slot receiver and had at least one season with over 100 receptions. He was a humble kid too, very professional to interview. He reminded me a lot of his coach Will Christian, positive, humble and gave the credit to the guys around him as Marionville had a very talented offensive line a a good running back in Ryan Wilson.

Defense held Princeton to 107 yards of total offense in the championship game.
