Some of the bigger schools didn't have info but I don't think it changed the overall outcome of the discussion I am trying to start. Have Fun!

I think everyone expected Carthage to be better, given the experience they brought back from last year after getting beaten on. From purely a record standpoint, I’d say Branson is the bigger surprise.
I agree the only surprise for me regarding Carthage is that I expected them to be better than they are. They are good but only seem marginally better than last year. All of the remaining games will be tough so we shall see how they end up. I would not be surprised if they go 3-0 or 0-3.

Carthage's offense really hasn't gotten any better at all from last year. The d line is very very good.

Lee's Summit and Kirksville are the obvious ones with a common denominator: Hired top notch HCs. We experienced a similar transformation here in Kearney two years ago...............

It's crazy how that works isn't it?? I've got some friends who coach and they have helped turn their programs around/are in the process so great coaching goes a heck of a long way. Talent doesn't hurt lol

The Joplin results support that. Carthage had just as much difficulty scoring against what I believe to be a weaker version of Joplin this year vs last. I was looking for them to win decisively or at least put up a lot of points, similar to republic if they were truly a top 5 team but they didn’t.

They have some nice weapons but anyone with a solid defense should figure them out and slow it down after a possession or two and once that happens there isn’t much margin for error, penalty, dropped pass etc. That could give Webb city an edge since their defense has for the most part remained in tact while their offense has stumbled.

I’m interested to see they match up with Republic.

When I labeled the most surprising team I was purely going off of projected by the cpu vs actual
CPU must have been on smoking some crack that day if they had MV going 4-4, since MV seniors were freshmen they have all pointed to this being their year. However nobody saw Seneca really turning it around and being in the mix. If anything I think MV has under preformed.

It begins with coaching in my opinion. I especially admire and root for schools like Kirksville who have enjoyed little or no success all time. Kearney, believe it or not, was in that boat back when I went to school here. First ever playoff appearance was (colder than the Antarctic in July) November 1986. First (and only until 2002) playoff win was November 1989. My old PE teacher Skillman was absolutely responsible for that amazing turnaround way back then...............

Couldn't agree more. A great coach can make a team with average talent into a really good team. I still don't think you can make a title run with average talent, been there and done that/seen that tried and it just doesn't work. But ultimately coaching is what makes the difference in big games if the teams are even remotely close talent-wise

Same for Coach Bonuchi in Excelsior Springs. The Tigers had like 6 undefeated seasons from the 60s into the 70s. He quits. They stink for 20 years. He comes back in 1989 and won two state titles by 1996.

Very hard, as we all know, to string a bunch of upsets together but I've seen some hellacious coaching in single games that shocked virtually everyone.

Same with Warsaw. Coach Morrow started a dynasty, left and then came back as well. Now a hometown kid has them on the rise again! Great to see in Warsaw again!
