The warts are just toooooo many. Not sure what they will do this winter, but this team seems to have so many weak spots I don't think it can be fixed.

Then they must have done the right thing by making no moves at trade deadline. :p

Nope!! They should have started building for next year. Too many OFs To say they did the right thing is very short sighted.
You're wound a little too tight today vb, didn't you see the little pink guy with his tongue out laughing at the end of my reply?
I don't know what they'll do but it has to be some stuff on both sides of the ball. They need pitching, and defense and you can't play all these outfielders. The other side of that is what do GM's around baseball think of our outfielders and which ones would the Birds be willing to give up. They said the other night the most asked about guy before the deadline was Tommy Pham. Will they give him up, he is older than most of the other guys and who knows how long his eyesight issue will be good enough to play at this level.

The Cards and Scout bring the worst out of me sorry. I can ignore scout but there is no ignoring the Birds!

Should have sold high on Pham, if the return was good enough. My guess is, the GMs asking were trying to get him on the cheap. I'd have moved Marp for a good return too. And not moving Lynn, and not resigning him, could be the dumbest of all moves ever. Moving those three guys isn't necessarily blowing it up, and could've brought a nice return. As it were, Birds still lack defense, bullpen, and a thumper.

Mo doesnt understand the buy low sell high concept. They shopped Piscotty and Grichuk around at the trade deadline when their value was its lowest ever. Signing Yadi to the three year deal when you have Kelly in the wings is still mind boggling.

I hope Kelly hits better than he has if he ever gets to be a regular.

Clearly Mo had no idea what he was doing as GM. The second most wins in all of baseball over the last 10 years was just dumb luck.

They've done some nice things to keep in contention, no doubt.

Although you have to consider (a) he had Pujols, Waino, and Molina in place when he took over and (b) Luhnow was stocking the farm system.

Leake has to go before Wacha
Wacha going to the pen would be to help the pen, and use some possibly solid assets in the rotation. Leake going to the pen would be because he sucks and would be a mop up guy. Sorta like what should happen to Waino when he comes back.

At this point I'd be happy with an '18 rotation of...
  • CMart
  • Reyes
  • Lynn
  • Weaver
  • Flaherty
Leaves remaining bullpen contracts as Waino, Leake, Cecil, and the club control/arb guys. Leake and Cecil until 2020 is scary. Lyons, Sammy T, and Bowman can all contribute. And I think Wacha could be scary good in the back end.

Obviously Waino and Leake aren't going to be in a bullpen, or the same bullpen. But I don't know how you can keep running them out there two out of five days. Might end up having to eat some cash on Leake and Cecil both to move them. Move some of the OF'ers for pen help. And spend some cash to get a thumper. Problem is, the '18 FA class is horrid on the thumper front.

They are going to give Leake a lot of leeway. They owe him nearly $50 M

They should wait until next spring to allow for that leeway. If they are serious about making the playoffs this year then they have to get him out of the rotation and try to get him right. Take advantage of the 10 DL. If not then start playing Carson Kelly more and find out what Toui can do under the stress of the 8th and 9th inning.

As they should. I'm ready to dump him because his WHIP is north of 2 since the ASB. He's not that bad, obviously. And is probably a fine back of the rotation guy. But would love to have room for Weaver, Flaherty, and Reyes all in '18. I just have a feeling they'll be better than Waino or Leake.

I agree!! However I don't think you can have all 3 of them in the rotation because in this day and age young pitchers innings are kept to a minimum, especially Reyes coming off surgery. I would bet that Reyes will spend next year in the bullpen. Maybe our next closer. Next years rotation will be similar to this year.
1. Martinez
2. Waino (money)
3. Wacha
4 .Leake (money)
5. Weaver
Another season of .500 or worse baseball.

I think it will be easier for them to move on with Waino. Only one year left.
