NJCAA says SMSU basketball
program has committed
multiple rules violations
The Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly basketball program has been found in violation of multiple infractions by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), but no punitive actions have been taken at this time.
This is a result of SMSU-West Plains officials self-reporting a recruiting violation to the NJCAA after learning Head Coach Tom Barr was using a Booster Club member’s private airplane in his player recruiting efforts. After this initial report to the NJCAA, it was learned additional violations of NJCAA regulations have occurred when the same plane was used to give student athletes flights to their homes during the recent spring break.
SMSU-West Plains officials today released this statement to The Quill:
“In a letter dated April 21, 2004, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) determined that the SMSU-West Plains basketball program has committed multiple violations of two categories of NJCAA bylaws, one regarding recruiting and one regarding trips home for current and past student-athletes. The university will not contest this determination and is in the process of taking corrective action to ensure these violations are not repeated. The determination is the result of self-reporting of possible violation and request for determination by the university. As a part of the corrective action, the university wishes to work with the NJCAA to seek greater clarity in future NJCAA bylaw revisions.”
SMSU-West Plains Chancellor Kent Thomas today told The Quill the university must next determine what actions, if any, it should take in response to this determination. “That response will be submitted to the NJCAA prior to the NJCAA making any decision about sanctions,” Thomas added.
He said the university is at Step 2 in a six-step process.
