NJCAA says SMSU basketball
program has committed
multiple rules violations

The Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly basketball program has been found in violation of multiple infractions by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), but no punitive actions have been taken at this time.
This is a result of SMSU-West Plains officials self-reporting a recruiting violation to the NJCAA after learning Head Coach Tom Barr was using a Booster Club member’s private airplane in his player recruiting efforts. After this initial report to the NJCAA, it was learned additional violations of NJCAA regulations have occurred when the same plane was used to give student athletes flights to their homes during the recent spring break.
SMSU-West Plains officials today released this statement to The Quill:
“In a letter dated April 21, 2004, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) determined that the SMSU-West Plains basketball program has committed multiple violations of two categories of NJCAA bylaws, one regarding recruiting and one regarding trips home for current and past student-athletes. The university will not contest this determination and is in the process of taking corrective action to ensure these violations are not repeated. The determination is the result of self-reporting of possible violation and request for determination by the university. As a part of the corrective action, the university wishes to work with the NJCAA to seek greater clarity in future NJCAA bylaw revisions.”
SMSU-West Plains Chancellor Kent Thomas today told The Quill the university must next determine what actions, if any, it should take in response to this determination. “That response will be submitted to the NJCAA prior to the NJCAA making any decision about sanctions,” Thomas added.
He said the university is at Step 2 in a six-step process.

If Barr is fired and Pat Smith leaves than Barr must be in top two for Job at Moberly.

Speaking for myself, we'd be pleased to get Tom Barr to lead the Hounds!
Classy guy!

GREY3DOG I WOULD JUST ABOUT BET YOU WOULD HAVE A FEW HUNDRED NEW FANS ROOTING FOR THE HOUNDS WHEN THEY CAME TO WEST PLAINS IF BARR WAS THE COACH

GRIZZLY MAYOR
I'm sure Coach Barr will be welcomed by his old fan base when he comes to play with whatever school hires him. Your suggesting that over 200 grizzly fans are only there because of a coach. I dont agree. They come to watch a good basketball game. I resent the fact your are trying to make it sound like the team and the new coaches whomever they maybe or whatever happens with this job will not be supported. You will be in the minority. Not every fan thinks Coach Barr is the only real deal to be found. There are alot of quality coaches seeking new jobs and West Plains is a gravy train. I've heard their have been many high quality basketball coaches inquiring about the job already. Only time will tell the outcome. So, go ahead and defect from the grizzlies we will just yell louder without you.

Not only are you wrong about alot of things, but your way off--not even close about who I am. Im just a person that believes in right and wrong. I dont believe that just because who you are should keep you out of trouble. Just the contrary you should follow the rules even closer when you have fans especially children that look up to you and your players. You should abide by a higher standard.

Good post, JoeBB! I wish more thought like you did!
Coaches and officials ought to follow AT LEAST the same rules as everybody else, if not more so. They are, after all, role models whether they want to be or not.
I think Coach Barr would make a fine addition to the Moberly storied program, as well as Coach Seifert if he indeed would like to step back into that role. He had the Hounds rolling until he got shafted by the unfortunate experience down in Tennessee.

This is my feeling about a new coach in Moberly if Pat leaves.I don't know of any reason why Moberly would want to hire anyone that has been accused of using bad juidgement whether or not they are guilty. There are a lot of coaches available without hiring one with a cloud hanging over their head. This is not intended to single out anyone in particular.I hope this applies to all candidates. They have been pretty successful in the past following these lines of thought and there is no reason to change now.
