Just so I have this right as the standard seems to keep changing. If it's a popular sport worldwide, then it can't be a niche sport? Or is it everything but football and basketball are niche sports?

This really shouldn't be that confusing for you. American college soccer is niche. Worldwide, soccer is extremely popular. Soccer is popular in America when we are playing in a World Cup final.
