A lot of folks, me included, want to bag on Mabry for the poor offense. But when you consider last year's team, which ended up 3rd in runs scored in the NL, against this year you can clearly see a big issue. Last year they led the league in HRs. But they either didn't re-sign or traded away 84 of those. The only hitter they picked up was Fowler. Dex has never hit more than 17. He sure isn't going to hit 84 bombs. The plan obviously was to score more runs without the HRs. But when your top two in the order are hitting .223 and .230 you're just not going to score many runs. And when you run the bases so poorly you're not going to gain many there either. Jed has been a pleasant surprise but I don't expect him to hit .300 for the year and I don't expect Pham to stick around and hit .300 either. I'm not sure how much we can blame Mabry for the woes. I suppose with the Memphis hitting coach being brought up we'll find out over the next few weeks. I've also always liked Pop Warner in the minor leagues. Maybe he can have some positive impact on the younger guys.
