Nixon and the Guard

Nixon made a big show out of saying he wasn't going to allow property destruction and looting again. He declared the state of emergency so the National Guard could be ready to step in and help. He said they had taken all the necessary steps to ensure they could control the situation. But it appeared they decided to just sit back and watch for the first few hours last night. I guess the Guard was brought in at some point late but there was no sign of them while the cars and buildings were being set on fire and the looting was going on right on live TV. He needs to be asked what changed between last week and last night. Why did they not try to stop it right from the start? I'm sure those business owners would like to know. Was he just making idle threats and really had no intentions of doing what he said? Did he get asked to not do it from someone else? Why exactly did he not back up his words from less than a week ago?

They need to call this the "Rumor and Duck Plan". All the cops dress up in capris with flowers in their hair and sing happy days. That always seems to work.

Good call General Patton.
The genius of announcing the results
in the dark, was that your idea also?

Think it matters much? It's dark at 5:30 now. Want to release those results when people are still on the way home from work?

It didn't make any difference at all. The criminals that burned ferguson were going to do it no matter the time of day or the decision.

Obama called for "Care and Restraint" by the police and he got it. Trouble is thugs burned the city down

I think you need to go back and read my posts from a few months back, I was very clear in my belief that the biggest problem on the first night of protests in August was that the police sat around and allowed stores to be looted. Not responding to QT set the tone that they could go loot wherever they wanted. The police weren't really under duress that night in terms of serious threats. They weren't being shot at. They just chose not to respond.

Listening to the comments of Chief Belmar and Mr. Johnson, I think they felt that last night was more difficult due to the amount of gun shots. I think they didn't feel safe. I can live with their decision last night if they felt they were preserving lives by not responding to certain events.

He should have held it to Tuesday AM.

Nixon and local police officials ALL said the Guard was there to protect police stations and other areas so the POLICE could handle the protestors. People growled because the Guard was brought in the first time and growled again that they were there at all, now they're complaining because they didn't do enough. Well now they will have enough of them to do something IF they're allowed to do so. If the police that were present were told NOT to stop people from turning over police cars, burning police cars and other cars in parking lots, breaking windows and looting stores I assume they didn't want the guard to stop them either. I would also assume it will be a different story tonight but that remains to be seen. If they don't start busting heads and taking people to jail tonight this thing will be even more out of control tonight.

Bad news for know it alls. The N. Guard recommended they announce early in the day for obvious reasons to anyone with a brain. Bobby Mc made another in a series of brilliant decisions and ignored their advice.

Nixon's comment yesterday on the timing of the announcement was pretty telling.

McCulloch got the half hour of prime time tv that he wanted, though!
