Mt Vernon FB coach comment

So give us some details. When was he at those other schools? Why did he leave MV and when did he come back? I have known him as a great coach at MV but clearly I dont know the whole story.

He was at Mt Vernon as an assistant for two years before becoming the head coach in 1981. He left to take over Webb City in 1987. From there he went to Ozark the next year. He was there three or four years before moving back to Mt Vernon, leaving coaching and going into insurance. Eventually he got back into coaching as an assistant at Mt Vernon for a couple of years before taking the top spot back. That was in 2014. Might be off a year or two... but that is pretty close.......

Dalton : Really? What happened?

Red Webster : I got married to an ugly woman. Don't ever do that. It just takes the energy right out of you. She left me, though. Found somebody even uglier than she was. That's life. Who can explain it?

Can you give some of us who may not be familiar with the complete story of Coach Cox? He did this twice? Webb City?
Graduated from Southern, He was hired in May of 81 as Head coach of MV, I think before that he might have been in the St louis area maybe Kennedy? he went 41-23 those 6 years at MV 1982 squad finished runner up in Class 2 and the 1985 Squad lost I believe in the first round to Republic my years get fuzzy as I get older. 1986 he was at Webb City were he went 6-4, He then moved to Ozark. At Ozark he coached Rusty Meadearis who went on to play for the U, I believe he went 21-9 at Ozark. He left in 1990 to become a insurance agent in MV. Overall at that time he was 68-36 I think. Not sure when but he started coaching Junior High again at MV don't know exactly when just remember starting to see him on the sideline? But then came back to be head coach at MV. They guy is great to talk to but a fierce competitor if you are on the other sideline.

If I understood correctly, he was also part-owner of the Mickey Owen Baseball School for a while, but it was called the Sandlot under their operation

Yes, I think Tom and his partner just sold it this year. Believe the new operators are bringing back the Mickey Owens name.

Tom also played a large role in the MV girls 2012 bball state championship run. Great coach and great person, he will be greatly missed when he hangs it up someday.

Tom is just a winner. Everything he touches finds success. I've predominantly covered Monett/Cassville most of my career, but have seen a lot of MV football as well. His coaching style has changed with time, and adapted to the style of play and kids he is coaching. On the football side he continuously takes average level talent and makes them competitive. He is the best offensive mind in SWMO. Rumors are that he will go out after this years juniors graduate. Mount Vernon football will take a big step backwards after that.

hmmm..

More tidbits about him. His son Kellen was a really good player at Mt. Vernon who went on to play at Missouri Southern. And Tom Cox has provided color commentary for the Lions’ football games as well, always interesting to listen to and full of great perspective.

Sold insurance for American Family Insurance, was my agent for a while after my own father retired from that line of work.

I also think, or so I hear, he likes pina coladas, getting caught in the rain and champagne, but he’s not much into health food.

That was actually before Webb was a thing.
I believe 1988 was the first year they started their 'thing'. Some of my relatives played on those early teams. Seems like I have vague memories of watching a game at MSSU, no idea who they were playing or why it was at MSSU. Maybe I am making that up entirely.

They did actually play Joplin at MSSU in 1990,

That's probably what I am remembering. For some reason I thought it was a playoff game but Joplin at MSSU would make more sense. Would be fun if they still did that.

They played a few games there in the 90s I think.

Yeah I am thinking Mark Smith got hurt in that game, I think Monett played them the next week at home and the back up which probable would have been the starter at any other school played.
