Did anyone hear the humorous comment coach Tom Cox made after this friday nights game with with Reed Springs ? Tom was sporting a big mountianeer smile when He said something to the affect that they wanted to give a nice going away present to the schools that didn't want to be in the Big 8 anymore.

That comment should apply more to Marshfield and Rogersville. Reeds is basically moving down.

so by moving down, you are talking enrollment? So you consider West Plains as moving down, too?

In a way, yes, WP is moving down.
They’ve been in a conference where 70-80% of the schools are larger than them for the last 22 years.

Now they’re moving to a conference where 65% of the schools are smaller than them, 75% if Hillcrest and Parkview join. BUT, all the schools are at least in their classification and above.

Reeds Spring is moving to a conference where 100% of the schools are smaller than them and it’s not even close. Two Class 2, one Class 1 school even.

Not a fan of WP moving to the OMC if I’m being honest. I think it hurts them in football in particular when it comes to the ultimate goal of winning games in October and November.

It would be almost like West Plains moving back to the SCA.

And this move no doubt hurts Reeds in football. They will not be as close to battle tested come the playoffs. And I agree that this is not the best move for WP from a football perspective.

You have to look at more that enrollment. In a perfect world that would work.. But when you are going to have multiple mid week trips that get kids home after midnight when they have school the next morning, if there is an alternative you look at it.

If WP went back to the SCA, that would be terrible.
The conference has evolved so much since they’ve left. Plus, it would just never happen.

The largest school in the conference has had the worst program in the conference for most of the last decade, and Cabool and Thayer are Class 1,
and even in a down year like this year, WP would probably still run through the SCA, this year at least, and that’s not a dig at any members of the SCA, it’s just the truth.
The only team that would give them a game is Ava, but the Zizzers would still beat them, as they should.

Leaving the SCA, made WP better. The OC, made WP better. They had two terrible years in the early 2010s but from 2002-2008 in WPs early years in the OC, going 3-4 in that conference wasn’t no slouch, Camdenton was making playoff runs, Waynesville won a state title, Kickapoo had the Doke’s brothers coming through at RB, the OC was some good football back then.

I think leaving the OC, solves the problem of WP going into a down cycle for a few years, but that’s it. Bad for them long term.

I looked at Reeds travel. They had several trips under an hour but Lamar and Nevada would be rough.

Agree with all of that.

Lamar, Nevada, Seneca, and McDonald County mid week would all be rough. 4 of the teams in the new league are basically as close of closer than the closest in the current league

Honestly Reeds could dominate this conference in Football. Everybody says these moves are not about football but if Reeds becomes what Bolivar was in the Small COC could these schools kick them out also, that would leave Reeds looking again..
And you look at Reeds Springs it is a growing community down by the Lake, nice schools, They have been with in 70 students of Monett at times, you have to wonder if they could grow to class 4?

There was a lot more the the end of the COC small than Bolivar "winning". And they finished third in football the last year of the league

And forgive me for not knowing, but Class 1 is the class with 32 teams now, right (not Class 6)?…

…doesn’t that in theory speed up Reeds’ eventual move to Class 4 (by 32 teams)?

Class 5 is still the catch-all, right? 🤔

Class 1 and Class 6 are both capped.. then divided out (or close to it) for 2-5. I don't belive there is still a "catch all" class.

The numbers are going to have to change a whole lot for the Wolves to move up to Class 4. There are 23 Class 3 Schools larger than the Wolves.

The lowest school in class 4 this year is at 511, you guys were at a reported 505 a year ago...

It was one outlier year. We have not been close and will not be any where close to that number fo the foreseeable future...

They won't be able to compete with these 3 schools coming in football but have already been playing these schools in other sports.

The numbers I used I mean. Not going to be 100% accurate to this year. But I was making a point about reeds being significantly larger. That’s all.

2023 MSHSAA Football Manual

Page 12 makes it sound like classes 2-6 will always have 8 districts, but the number of districts in class 1 will vary based on how many schools are in class 1 🤷🏻‍♂️

People thinking the Big 8 East was "battle testing" anybody is comical. Class 3 is weak enough consistently that Reeds will be just fine.

I do agree the east is the weaker side, But I also think at times we put to much stock into this battle test at times. Not saying it doesn't help either... Just saying good teams find ways to win. Come play offs you hope anything can happen.

MV came out of the east last year and dang neer beat Seneca the West Champs and they had a 2 TD lead at one time.

Can you give some of us who may not be familiar with the complete story of Coach Cox? He did this twice? Webb City?

Coach Cox basically laid the foundation for MV (twice), and then Webb and Ozark Too bad OzarksSports has faltered without him. Great man and great coach.
