MSU buys out Steckel

Very surprised by this, where do they go from here?

I have no idea. I can't imagine that they can afford anyone worth a damn. I also do not think anyone is going to jump at the chance to take over the program.

The word is the buyout is privately funded, so the school isn't on the hook for that. And while I don't think they'll hire someone with big name value, it is FCS after all, they still could find someone who is possibly better than Stec.

You're right. I overlooked the privately funded part.

They will be flooded with applicants looking for their first HC gig at that level.

I agree, they are one of the biggest schools in the Valley. They won't have a lack of interest, the issue is just timing.

I am going to guess that DeAndre Smith gets the job. I am sure Roderique's name gets brought up, can't see him leaving at this point but who knows.

I wish MO State could hire a good coach and be more competitive.

I don't know if he can coach but he sure as hell could run Jesse's Bear Bone.
Lets give him a chance, can't be any worse. Of course, I don't think I could pass on J. R. if he was available.

How about all those kids who committed to them a couple of weeks ago? I know you commit to a school but let's face it probably the biggest factor is the HC. NCAA could make a rule if coach is fired right after signing day the kids are free to walk w no penalty.

They'll probably hire DeAndre Smith, but I think that ship sailed when they hired Stec. I've got doubts about whether he'll work or not. I'd prefer another person.

I agree with everything you've said. DeAndre doesn't really excite me, and I think there's a lot of the fanbase who will be upset if they don't get him. To me that's not the best move.

DeAndre Smith would be a great hire. He has name recognition in the area and with alumni. It would at least create some excitement around the program.

They can walk, but scholarships are taken up at other schools now.

I don't care for that, to be honest. We need to stop hiring guys that create "excitement" with a press conference, but guys who'll create excitement through WINNING!

What alumni? About five people care about that football program. Why should we hire a guy to please five people?

They've GOT to hire a WINNER. A REAL one!

JR for recruiting, for winning, for the love of God, get out the checkbook and get this guy.

Oh, God! Art just mentioned Jerry Kill on Sports Talk. Twenty years too late for that one, as far as I'm concerned.

Grant Chestnut the OC from Kennesaw State.

Run the flexbone.
Works at the service academies. It is an interesting change to watch from a fan's perspective. I feel like I watch the same game over and over. But if it fails, it's ugly. Cause it's old. Gets people fired quicker IMO.

Can you give some examples of flexbone coaches getting fired? Or failing for that matter?

I wouldn't know where to begin. I am a high school coach. I've seen kids screw up tieing their shoes. They literally can't find the practice field when I am standing on it telling them where to go.

I don't care about a press conference either. He's a former player, perhaps the best to play there, who understands the community and what it takes to win there. He's been at several colleges as an assistant, so he has plenty of experience to draw from. I don't who you have in mind as far as a winner, but I don't see them breaking the bank to bring some big name in who is just looking for the next FBS job to come open. Former players would be excited to see one of their own come back and turn the program around, as would others who have distanced themselves from the program over recent years.

I just think there is so much ignorance when it comes to Missouri State football. One comment I keep seeing is that they won't be willing to pay a good guy, well their last coach was one of the higher paid guys in the Valley. What makes you think they wouldn't do that again?

Another comment I keep seeing is that people around town are apathetic to the program so what's it matter? Well they just crowd sourced close to half a million dollars just to pay a guy to leave. I think there are some important people who care.

With that said I'm fully prepared for Moats to unveil an underwhelming hire and then pay him 175k and give his assistants a 200k pool. I just don't think there is anything from the last 5 years that would lead me to believe that.

I've had some people mention they think Chuck Hepola from Evangel could get some consideration. To me that doesn't seem likely, but I guess it's possible given what he's done at Evangel. FWIW a crucial part of Evangel's turnaround has been based on his ability to recruit the area well. Still don't see that happening though.

Missouri State is not going to compete in that conference by recruiting the area well. Did you see Illinois State this year? They need D-1 transfers, juco studs and throw in some top recruits from Florida or Texas or California or whatever large population center you have recruiting connections. MSU hasn’t been good because they don’t get good enough players. It’s not X’s and O’s.

That's weird, because North Dakota State dominates FBS with kids from the Kansas City area and rural parts of Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and the Dakotas with a few Florida and Texas kids sprinkled in.

Well obviously the area to Missouri State would be a lot different than the area to Evangel. But you would hope a good coach could scale with his program. So if at Evangel he recruited the Ozarks and surrounding area well, you would hope he'd do the same in NWA, Memphis, Tulsa, KC/STL etc. He's just a name I've heard mentioned, he wouldn't be who I would expect they'd go for though.

I do agree with you though, the place where Mo State needs to improve the most is recruiting.

This is exactly right, the better kids I've seen in the KC area that aren't going FBS seem to always be headed to NDSU, SDSU, and UNI. Those are 3 very good Valley programs who rarely pursue FBS transfers and pull a lot of kids from Missouri State's territory.

Yeah idc who it is, they need to cast a recruiting net from Chicago down to Nashville across to Oklahoma City, up to Lincoln, and then recruit everywhere within that radius. Gives you some good options and areas to choose from.

You do that, you're hitting St. Louis, Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, Paducah, Tulsa, Springfield, Kansas City, Omaha, Topeka, Ames, and Iowa City. If you cant pull 80 decent football players out of those areas, you don't deserve the job.

MO State recruiting should start with about a 4 hour radius from Springfield. You can hit almost all of the state including St. Louis and KC, That would get you deep into OK, AR, and KS. Hit those areas hard and then branch out. Obviously look into FL and TX for some athletes too. If you keep your recruiting "local" like that you will create more interest from people who may actually attend your games to go see players they are familiar with. There have been numerous players from the area they haven't even recruited that went on to have success at other FCS and big D2 schools.

NDSU has more Florida and Georgia kids than Mo kids. Almost 1/3 of their roster is from Minnesota and Wisconsin. They have recruits from all over the U.S. Several from Illinois. Not many from the Dakota’s.
