I was hoping for Jackson to win the title this year. This report has cooled that.
When I hear (see) multiple accounts of basically the same story, I tend to believe them. If it's not true, then there's a much more disturbing controversy afoot. If it is true, then major props to the Battle team and coaches for taking the high road and cleaning up the locker room.If it happened. Law enforcement seems to have no idea any of this occurred. Seems sketchy to me.
You cannot question the actions of the Battle team under any circumstances. It’s obvious they’re angelic choir boys and above reproach .
Ha, they may well be a standup program. I’ve only seen them that one time but it definitely left a negative impression even though we beat them.Brace for the inevitable barrage of accusations.
If that's the case, then this is worse. Coach needs to go worse.A source I have that is very close to the situation told me that the locker room was vandalized, but by the Battle team. When this was brought to the attention of the Battle admin, at that point the racial stuff was mentioned and they were claiming the vandalism was done by somebody from Jackson. This is a he said-she said situation, but it doesn't make sense that somebody from Jackson would vandalize the locker room and get into people's wallets only to have the Battle players clean it all up and not notify the authorities and then alert the media when they got back home. Plus, in all the years I've been to Jackson to watch sporting events, I've NEVER heard of this happening. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't have much love lost for Jackson.
If that's the case, then this is worse. Coach needs to go worse.
Whatever happened or didn't...it sure backfired on them and now they are left looking ridiculous.
But this also says something about our journalism professionals today, get a lead on some sort of hear say, and instead of doing your research and getting both sides of the story, you run with the half truth leaving a big steaming pile of crap for everybody to digest, only to go on to the next story that maybe you can sensationalize.

Wish I could have done a triple "Like" on this one. The only exception I take to it is using the term professionals in relation to journalism. There aren't very many truly professional journalists anymore, which you allude to.
So professional-journalist=oxymoron.
Yeah it seems to me those in the media tend to be biased not all but a good portion and that doesn't have to be a left or right thing it can be in anything. In this case they were spun a great yarn by an upset parent about how their kids were disrespected and targeted during a football game by another town and officials. So instead of doing a few days of research reaching out to both schools and all those involved and writing a very good story, they went with sort of a one sided look to stir the masses that fit what they were being told.
It's a compelling story and TOTALLY fits the liberal media's agenda.
The "journalist" who ran with this should be fired, along with the coach and AD at Battle for perpetuating some fake story about hate crimes being committed all because their team got smoked by a predominantly white team.
As far as I'm concerned they committed a hate crime themselves, at the very least they libeled and hurt the reputation of not just Jackson's team, but their entire town.
How is it the media's fault if Jackson refused to tell their side of the story initially? The initial report from the Columbia Tribune had quotes from the Jackson superintendent and even the Jackson police department. If Link would have told their side of the story starting on Monday, the narrative wouldn't have been so heavily skewed towards Battle's side of things.
And I am not saying that Link and the Jackson administration had bad motives initially either. They might have been trying to take the high road and not really delve into the security footage, etc. But they can't have it both ways, you can't blame the media for overplaying a story if you don't tell them all of the information you have initially. If they had it would have been more of a he said/she said story from the outset.
The "journalist" could have taken 3 days, gotten all the information and THEN went to print before just slopping down some sensationalist nonsense.
She knows racism especially racism against kids gets clicks, so why do due diligence or have journalistic integrity, especially when you have coaches perpetuating the story. I say they're both to blame and should both be dealt with accordingly.
You have to provide that info to the media though. If you decline comment or don't tell your side of the story then you are not going to do yourself any favors. I honestly think that Link didn't want to throw Battle under the bus initially and that is why he held back on the security video info.
Then the story really blew up yesterday and he finally decided to tell their side to a local media outlet. That's fine but you cannot blame other media outlets for not reporting the Jackson side of the story if you either don't tell them or decline comment.
As an aside, John Link was the head basketball coach in my hometown in the early 90s so I am familiar with him and think that he is a good guy. I am not trying to say anything negative about him. But his refusal to tell his side of things from the beginning is why the story was reported as it was.
Which is fine, my issue is Battle's coach allowed this to happen, knowing none of it was true. That's a problem.
I would agree that if this thing is fully investigated and it is proven that Battle lied about the whole thing, then absolutely there should be ramifications for that. I simply do not feel that the media really should share the same burden if that is ultimately the case. It seems clear to me that they tried to get answers from both sides.
THE ORGINAL REPORTER BIO AND BELOW THAT WHAT PARENTS SAID HAPPENED.
Brittany Wiley joined ABC 17 News in December 2018 as a full-time reporter. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a bachelor's degree in journalism and media studies and a minor in political science. Columbia is actually a journey back home for Brittany -- her parents are Rock Bridge High School graduates and she lived here until she was 5 years old.
Two Battle parents contacted ABC 17 News over the weekend saying Battle High School players, cheerleaders and fans endured a "hostile environment" Friday night in Jackson. Both parents said players from Jackson High School were using racial slurs against Battle football players and cheerleaders. They also said some Jackson fans snuck into the visiting Spartans' locker room and trashed it.
One parent alleged Jackson players pulled a cheerleader's hair and slapped another cheerleader on the buttocks.
