More Jackson v Battle issues

If it happened. Law enforcement seems to have no idea any of this occurred. Seems sketchy to me.
When I hear (see) multiple accounts of basically the same story, I tend to believe them. If it's not true, then there's a much more disturbing controversy afoot. If it is true, then major props to the Battle team and coaches for taking the high road and cleaning up the locker room.

Hope this didn't actually happen. Then again I hope it did so battle isn't just slinging mud after getting whipped . Either way ...I'm mad about this . Racists can't be tolerated ...but people that make up claims are just as bad or worse . You know what makes me mad ? Rape. You know what makes me more mad ? False rape aligations . Bottom line is ...I hope this gets sorted out and if it's true then I hope someone takes action . If it's false ....I hope someone takes action

I was there before the teams came out for warmups. I witnessed NO hostility between any of the opposing players. To the contrary, loose balls and other interactions were courteous, if not cordial.
I then witnessed the Spartans run onto the field after warmups and huddle at their sideline with much enthusiasm, leaving me in high expectations for a great contest. Suddenly, inexplicably and en masse, they turned toward the Jackson sidelines and ran out on top of the Jackson emblem and started jumping up and down while shouting and gesturing toward the Jackson players. Jackson players responded from their own sideline with shouts and jeers of their own, which seemed reasonable to me. Battle then retreated to their sideline and everything proceeded normally. From there, Jackson went on to thoroughly discombobulate, dismantle, and demoralize Battle in every aspect of the game. I expected more from a team ranked 7th in C-5.
I have a few questions, though:
1. Is this confrontational display something Battle does preceding every away game?
2. Did Coach Ellison know this was planned and, if not, was he disapproving of it?
3. Why was there no mention of this altercation, initiated by his team, in the article?
4. Why did the coach hold his team In a sideline huddle for several minutes at halftime while the refs were waiting to start the halftime clock and knowing that the band wanted to take the field and begin homecoming festivities? Then we all watched as his team walked slowly across the field toward their locker room. Very disrespectful.

It seems like a stretch to suggest it was all orchestrated, especially involving a coach but weirder things have happened. Especially if they are getting negative blow back from the field performance and need justification.

I will say that of all the schools I’ve seen come to Carthage - Battle has stood out as probably the least classy. Just in terms of cheap shots, behavior, etc. Spartans looked like their primary goal was to break a leg or force a concussion to disable a player and then they’d try to win the game. Just played a different breed of ball than what we’d seen before.

Needless to say, when that sportmanship thread revealed Battle as the offending school I was not surprised.

I've been to Jackson as both a football fan and official for many years. Never had anything remotely like that happen. The dressing rooms are locked and secure. Furthermore, I know for a fact that there was not one word complaining to the officials about the racial taunts last Friday night. NOT ONE. Sure, on the officiating side, a little bantering by players back and forth with a rival throughout the years but never with a racist tone. To me it's a lesson learned about taunting a team and then having your ass handed to you and not handling it well. I know there are 3 sides to every story and if there were racial comments, please forgive my ignorance.

Brace for the inevitable barrage of accusations.
Ha, they may well be a standup program. I’ve only seen them that one time but it definitely left a negative impression even though we beat them.

I actually didn't realize until now Battle demographics are nearly 50% minority. For some reason I had just assumed it was your typical newly built suburban school that gets filled with mostly middle/upper middle class white kids.

A source I have that is very close to the situation told me that the locker room was vandalized, but by the Battle team. When this was brought to the attention of the Battle admin, at that point the racial stuff was mentioned and they were claiming the vandalism was done by somebody from Jackson. This is a he said-she said situation, but it doesn't make sense that somebody from Jackson would vandalize the locker room and get into people's wallets only to have the Battle players clean it all up and not notify the authorities and then alert the media when they got back home. Plus, in all the years I've been to Jackson to watch sporting events, I've NEVER heard of this happening. And this is coming from a guy who doesn't have much love lost for Jackson.

If that's the case, then this is worse. Coach needs to go worse.

I’m not tied in to any team and I’m just a football fan.... that being said, I’ve seen Jackson play multiple times and never once experienced anything like these accusations. I know someone very close to the situation and they have said that Battle did in fact destroy the locker room, breaking locker doors and putting dents in things. Nothing more than a case of sour grapes it seems. Merely battle crying wolf to cover their tracks for the damage done to the locker room. Why would jackson destroy a locker room at their home facility ? Makes no sense. Nothing racial was ever heard from the stands and the officials and school staff and local law enforcement was never notified of anything of the such. The first time Jackson officials were aware of the accusations was when it was reported by the media. If it were that serious, it’s something the Jackson officials would be aware of right away. Merely sounds like sour grapes. Can’t take an ass whooping like men and move on. Have to run to the media with false accusations but it’s nothing new from the Battle group. They’re the poster children of bad attitudes and dirty play. Just ask any officials in the state and they will say the same thing. Battle started with the taunting and Jackson finished it with the ass whooping. Cmon Battle, you’re better than this. Well, probably not.

One things for sure, if you are going to claim that someone broke into your locker room to vandalize your stuff, make sure there are no security cameras to refute your claims! And man the fireworks there will be if these two teams meet again in the playoffs!

If this is all made up, this coach should face serious consequences.

Coaches have so much influence on their players, both positive and negative. If he made this all up to cover for his players actions in vandalizing their own locker room, what a thing he just taught them....when you mess up, lie and deflect. Obv. only they know the truth.

Went through all the news stories and found orginal source that made this public.

It was a concerned (helicopter) parent that went to the ABC affiliate in Columbia after her son told her about the racial slurs, lockerroon trashed and a Jackson player slapped a Battle cheerleader in the buttocks.

I call bs on this. If that third thing happened it would of caused an incident on sideline the crowd would of seen

My opinion a kid told his mom an embellished story and she got woke (white parent) and went to tv station.

Those damn video cameras ruin everything. But maybe there was a secret trap door in the locker room and some local hoods sneaked up from the basement and damaged their locker room to frame the completely innocent visitors.

Whatever happened or didn't...it sure backfired on them and now they are left looking ridiculous.

But this also says something about our journalism professionals today, get a lead on some sort of hear say, and instead of doing your research and getting both sides of the story, you run with the half truth leaving a big steaming pile of crap for everybody to digest, only to go on to the next story that maybe you can sensationalize.

It's a compelling story and TOTALLY fits the liberal media's agenda.

The "journalist" who ran with this should be fired, along with the coach and AD at Battle for perpetuating some fake story about hate crimes being committed all because their team got smoked by a predominantly white team.

As far as I'm concerned they committed a hate crime themselves, at the very least they libeled and hurt the reputation of not just Jackson's team, but their entire town.

Wish I could have done a triple "Like" on this one. The only exception I take to it is using the term professionals in relation to journalism. There aren't very many truly professional journalists anymore, which you allude to.
So professional-journalist=oxymoron.

Yeah it seems to me those in the media tend to be biased not all but a good portion and that doesn't have to be a left or right thing it can be in anything. In this case they were spun a great yarn by an upset parent about how their kids were disrespected and targeted during a football game by another town and officials. So instead of doing a few days of research reaching out to both schools and all those involved and writing a very good story, they went with sort of a one sided look to stir the masses that fit what they were being told.

Exactly! The 24 hour news cycle as fueled by social media/internet. I guess investigative journalism is a dead concept. It is just too hard for reporters today. It seems it is publish the rumor, their opinion, half-truths and innuendo and push the sensationalism and then.......we may follow up and try to find something to support what we just published.

THE ORGINAL REPORTER BIO AND BELOW THAT WHAT PARENTS SAID HAPPENED.

Brittany Wiley joined ABC 17 News in December 2018 as a full-time reporter. She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a bachelor's degree in journalism and media studies and a minor in political science. Columbia is actually a journey back home for Brittany -- her parents are Rock Bridge High School graduates and she lived here until she was 5 years old.

Two Battle parents contacted ABC 17 News over the weekend saying Battle High School players, cheerleaders and fans endured a "hostile environment" Friday night in Jackson. Both parents said players from Jackson High School were using racial slurs against Battle football players and cheerleaders. They also said some Jackson fans snuck into the visiting Spartans' locker room and trashed it.

One parent alleged Jackson players pulled a cheerleader's hair and slapped another cheerleader on the buttocks.

How is it the media's fault if Jackson refused to tell their side of the story initially? The initial report from the Columbia Tribune had quotes from the Jackson superintendent and even the Jackson police department. If Link would have told their side of the story starting on Monday, the narrative wouldn't have been so heavily skewed towards Battle's side of things.

And I am not saying that Link and the Jackson administration had bad motives initially either. They might have been trying to take the high road and not really delve into the security footage, etc. But they can't have it both ways, you can't blame the media for overplaying a story if you don't tell them all of the information you have initially. If they had it would have been more of a he said/she said story from the outset.

The "journalist" could have taken 3 days, gotten all the information and THEN went to print before just slopping down some sensationalist nonsense.

She knows racism especially racism against kids gets clicks, so why do due diligence or have journalistic integrity, especially when you have coaches perpetuating the story. I say they're both to blame and should both be dealt with accordingly.

You have to provide that info to the media though. If you decline comment or don't tell your side of the story then you are not going to do yourself any favors. I honestly think that Link didn't want to throw Battle under the bus initially and that is why he held back on the security video info.

Then the story really blew up yesterday and he finally decided to tell their side to a local media outlet. That's fine but you cannot blame other media outlets for not reporting the Jackson side of the story if you either don't tell them or decline comment.

As an aside, John Link was the head basketball coach in my hometown in the early 90s so I am familiar with him and think that he is a good guy. I am not trying to say anything negative about him. But his refusal to tell his side of things from the beginning is why the story was reported as it was.

Which is fine, my issue is Battle's coach allowed this to happen, knowing none of it was true. That's a problem.

I would agree that if this thing is fully investigated and it is proven that Battle lied about the whole thing, then absolutely there should be ramifications for that. I simply do not feel that the media really should share the same burden if that is ultimately the case. It seems clear to me that they tried to get answers from both sides.

Fair enough.
