Monett’s football program receives top honor

The phrase “a tradition unlike any other” just took on a whole new meaning for the football program in Monett.

On Thursday, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, located in Springfield, announced the whole Monett High School football program would be inducted as part of its 2018 Class.

“I’m just speechless right now,” said Daryl Bradley, Monett athletic director. “It is hard to believe that we could receive this great honor. I think, once you begin to look at the long history of our program, you can see we do have a rich history. The hard part now is who do we choose to speak on our behalf? Monett has had so many great players and leaders that it makes the choice very difficult.”

The Monett High School football program has been among the most successful in state history. The Cubs have enjoyed 46 winning seasons since the state program launched in 1927. That includes state championship seasons in 1971, 1977 and 2016. Along the way, Monett has won 12 conference championships and 13 district titles. The 1971 team finished 12-0 and was coached by the late Burl Fowler, with coach Benny Lawson guiding the 1977 squad to an 11-2 record. Derrek Uhl coached the 2016 team to a 14-1 finish. The conference titles were won in 1971, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1990, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2007 and 2008. The district championships played out in 1971, 1977, 1985, 1990, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

I guess they don't count any of the conference championships before 1971?

I believe Leonard Bauer has been around for all of those state championship teams. He would be a great resource for a speaker.

Very very happy for Monett but this is a head scratcher. You can argue they have the second or third best football tradition in there own conference behind Seneca and Mt Vernon. And I honestly don’t know how Seneca isn’t in if this is there standards, I guess Tom Hodge being in is the rep for that. Regardless congrats Monett alum this is great for SW MO! I don’t mean to sound like Monett is undeserving they very rarely have been an easy game for anyone.

Don't see Mt. Vernon in that conversation at all. They have won one title in 78, and got embarrassed in 82 and 2017 title games.

But when I think about the conference historically I think of Seneca’s dominance in the 70’s through the mid 90’s to early 00’s and after that you have great teams patched in and a few dynasty’s but you can always count on Monett and Mt Vernon being a tough one. I didn’t know Mt Vernon had only one stare title though. One year I give them an * because they were completely screwed in the semi’s at Harrisonville like 10 years ago or so.

I think you could easly make that argument if you looked at the programs from the 80's on up.

However this is about the overall program, so I assumed they took into consideration the body of work Monett has accomplished since they first put on the leather helmets back in 1903 and played Springfield Normal school. If you look at our overall records it is pretty impressive. So that is my assumption what they considered.

How many schools in Missouri have three state titles??? Exp little schools in middle of nowhere that play with what they have

Not taking anything away from Mount Vernon.. congrats to them.
Chillicothe has 5 state titles, two 2nd place finishes, 24 conference titles all time, five undefeated seasons, 24 state playoff appearances, fifth team in MO to 600 wins. Undoubtedly there are other schools with even greater credentials.. Of course, Chillicothe's heyday was 60s-80s.

Several have three or more... Blue Springs, B.S South, Harrisonville, Camdenton, Chillicothe, Hazelwood Central and East, Jeff City, Platte County, Kearney, Webb and Valle of course....and several more... not sure how many are in the HOF though...

Either way, congrats to the Monett program! I know they gave Webb City some great games back in the day. Glad to see their program being recognized.
The number of people from Monett who will drive to Springfield for the banquet that the HOF overcharges for > the number of people who will drive from Chillicothe.
Thats for sure! I didn't go when my team was inducted, but I went to the yearly awards banquet for my daughter last year, which set a record for attendance that night, I realized it was just a great big fundraiser for them.

Well for you Webb fans Kurt Thompson is being inducted. For those other the 1978 Mount Vernon High school state championship team also. Dante Hall is being inducted.

Joining the Cubs in this year’s induction class are Kansas City Chiefs return man Dante Hall and New York Giants lineman Jason Whittle, of Camdenton High School, and Missouri State University. Also being inducted are long-time high school football coach Kurt Thompson, the 1978 Mount Vernon High School state championship team and long-time Chiefs trainer David Kendall.

Big part of it which is why certain programs in certain sports will never be honored - they can't deliver the tables. I have no doubt, however, that Chilli would show and that is a program worthy if not already in.
They do honor teams and programs but besides the Marceline-Brookfield Bell Game and the Webster Groves-Kirkwood Turkey game, what other games should be honored?
What about the Monroe City Basketball Tournament which I think is the oldest continuous in the state?
I diverse.

The credentials are obviously there. Send a sincere apology letter to 11AD and you may quit getting black balled.

Looking at the Hall of Champions I see Staley's first in 2011. They impressively pulled off the feat again last year in 2017 after only 6 years. Very commendable. Crazy thing is 2011 was also Lamar's first and they have repeated every year through 2017. I still find myself shaking my head. Extraordinary!
In the same time frame for Lamar they also have 2 state track championships and 3 state cross country championships.
