Ok...Gimmie the skinny on MS and the reputation. Because I hear it (low income, poor schools...blah blah), but the limited time I've spent in Hattiesburg and Jackson (Madison/Ridgeland) it seems really nice. But good lord, the drive down 55 to get there is DEPRESSING. I honestly like the idea of MS really, but we'll have a 4th or 5th grader by the time I hang it up. I don't want her in a economically depressed area with awful schools, just so her dad can play golf.

4th or 5th grader.....My youngest will graduate HS the year I would be eligible to retire, if I stay in this profession.

I'm not a beach guy. Don't get me wrong I love them for a short period, but I don't want that full time. Golf isn't high on my hobby list either. The wife and I talked about heading north west(Idaho/Montana), not quit the granola area. But those winters are brutal, and I am a winter guy.

Then again, may just stay here and build a nice house on our land and rent the other out. Nothing wrong with MIssourah.

You may change your mind about being a "winter guy" when you get older Kenkster.

Ain't that the truth. Mid 20's? Loved it. Mid 30's? Meh, but still loved a good snow day. Mid 40's? HATE it. Get cranky when leaves start falling from the trees. Get even more cranky when I've got heavy cold gear base layer and infrared UA head-to-toe for the Sunday tee time. Super dark place when the tundra is frozen and I can't play at all.

I am what I am......I love fall and spring seasons. You can have the heat, that is the season I HATE. You can warm up working outdoors in the cold. You can't cool down working outside in the heat.

Late October in a deer stand or mid spring in the turkey woods doesn't get any better than that.....

I was late to the whole marriage and kids party. Lived the life of a gypsy "college" kid until I was darned near 40. I'm kind of excited about it really. Whatever she's into, I'll be retired about the time she really starts getting into it. So I'll have plenty of time to run her around wherever and watch and hopefully coach her. I'm genuinely excited about that aspect.

I feel you on the beach. I can take it about 3-6 days once or twice a year. After that, I'm good. My wife could live in a castle of sand 5' from the tide though. Figure if I get her a few hours away, that'll do. But I've got to be able to play golf. I'm dropping the kid at school and heading straight to the course no less than three of the five days.

My dad owned a bunch of land in Wyoming when he passed. Not even sure who wound up with it. BEAUTIFUL. But I remember those winter pics. Vividly. You couldn't pay me to live through those winters. But man, that's more my idea of a summer vacay than the beach.

I don't even want a bunch of land.....Just a little sliver of land on a mountain fed stream that holds a lot of trout...Is that too much to ask? And the occasional mule deer and elk in my backyard.....

Keep in mind, a "bunch" to me was about 50 acres I think. Maybe 100. Was basically what you just described. To say it was off the beaten path was an understatement. Never got a chance to put a cabin on it before he passed, but it was going to be a chore. I've seen pics of snow in October and April both. No thanks. If I had to deal with snow half the year, I think I'd just pickle from the inside out. There's a reason those Russians pound vodka like it's water. And it ain't for the taste!

It has earned a lot of it's reputation. Lags behind Missouri in quite a few areas. Can't speak on the south side of the state, but in the north you're not too far from just about anything Missouri can provide. I hear you on the schools. All I can say is my BIL's family are exploring the private school route. They seem to have quite numerous options for all the obvious reasons.

In all my travels across the country, I always compare Missouri quite favorably to their competition. We've loved every stop, but Missouri has felt more homey than all the rest, even from her perspective as a Mississippian.

And there’s the back pocket option for us. Middle one will grad the yr I retire. Youngest will be 9 and will have been in district her whole life (we have a birth-2 program for TKs she’s in). It will be the only home she’s ever known. We’re building our version (public teacher and retail banker, so it’s no mansion) of a dream home in a golf course community. The obvious answer would be to stay put, enjoy retired life in what we’ve built. But these danged winters...

Sounds like my dream buddy! Hunkered down next to a nice woodstove

When I sue someone and am rewarded several million, I will alternate spending Jan-March in SW Florida (away from the crazies) and Arizona. Then July-mid September I travel the NW. The rest of the year shuttling between the homestead in Mo and my grandson in North Carolina, a beautiful state, by the way.

The older I get the more I hate winter. The last three years I have spent several weeks of winter down south and it is a re-energizing experience.

Well, if you want to fish trout, have elk, mule deer, moose or whatever and you want Idaho I would suggest heading up hiway 55. Cascade has kind of turned into a resort town. McCall is also but there is a little town North of there called New Meadows that might fit the bill.

AD’s constantly get themselves in a mess with premature extensions of their football and basketball coaches.

No need to extend him already without more time to evaluate him and the program.

Man looked at a few homes in Fremont... So you are moving up...
You know, the crazy thing is we got the lot for about what you could purchase one where we are renting now. About the only price difference of the actual home is the cost of the brick vs. siding. Bylaws require all brick now. Most of the other homes we looked at were 3/4 wrapped in siding and faced with brick or stone. And make NO MISTAKE, we are the poor people in the hood. I'd much rather be the smallest/cheapest house in the neighborhood than the largest. Helps my home value immensely, and makes it easy to sell if/when I need to.

For some reason you didn't strike me as a big Thai food guy....
