Meet the New Owner of United Airlines

I have seen people commenting on stories and tweets defending United Personnel and/or criticizing the passenger. These are the same people who lick corporate buttocks after getting shafted day after day.
The ones who make $20,000/year and still vote to cut billionaires taxes. This is the same argument for people who argue in favor of management over labor. Theoretically, only a tiny, fraction of a percent of people should be making those arguments, yet, anecdotally, it is an alarmingly large percentage.

United simply needed to make a monetary offer too good to refuse for someone on board. Instead they create a PR nightmare. One former airline CEO called the passenger "immature". Talk about clueless.

This guy is a victim of an assault. I hope he takes them to the cleaners. Before this I already disliked UA. I will make sure I avoid them from now on.
In my experience, the bizarre behavior from passengers and staff is getting worse. Maybe a large monetary judgment in favor of this victim will calm some people down.
The sickening part, most of the passengers sat on their hands or recorded on their stupid phones, instead of standing up to these bullies.

This was posted on twitter. "Not enough seating, prepare for a beating".

I loathe flying.
Every time is a miserable experience. I'm big enough, but I am always stuck in the middle seat between two morbidly obese strangers whose bodies are draped all over me.
Last summer, I got stuck next to this huge guy who was tattooed head to toe and had so many piercings in his face, it was a wonder he got through the metal detectors. I could deal with that, but he exuded an odor that was the foulest combination of BO, whiskey and cigarettes my olfactory senses have ever had the displeasure of experiencing.
Despite all this and this guy sweating all over me, I actually started to nod off, only to be awakened by SBD flatus that jolted me awake more proficiently than smelling salts ever could have.
I can't begin to describe how foul it was. Three different times. Each one actually caused me to wretch and I thought I may contribute to the reek by adding my vomit to the concoction of vapors.. In hindsight, though, that may actually have improved things.
At one point, I began eyeing the emergency doors and picturing myself opening one in mid-flight (somewhere over Utah, I believe) and throwing myself from the airliner. I had no wish to die, mind you, but I wanted OUT.
That's awesome. Please post more often.
And you kept your cool. My worst experience came in 2002 flying into LAX. An angry obnoxious drunk sitting behind my wife kicked her seat because she was talking too loud on her cell when we off boarding. Needless to say, it got ugly.

I just refuse to fly, you give up so many freedoms and rights to the airlines it is ridiculous once you board they basically own you. I have not flown enough to know but most of the news people say the airlines have the right to kick you off the plan if overbooked. But if there is 50 seats on a plane how to you sale 54 seats are they not good at math? I would say the government needs to step in and regulate this sort of behavior by the airlines, but we all know there is too much regulation as we have been told. So I guess if you don't want to give up your seat prepare to be re accommodated.

Is there no intermediary before airlines calls in security? Why could a PR person "backed up" by security not have confronted this individual first?

Just think the whole thing could have been better handled with words rather than fist.

Business traveling by plane is a pain. Vacation travel by plane is bearable. I've witnessed so much negative discourse I'm numb to it.

Seems to me that as mentioned above a simple offer you can't refuse would have been the best way to handle the situation, but then profit would suffer and we all know that can't happen. Hey don't forget United is people too.

The FAA has protocols already established for how these situations are to be handled. Procedures are already established.

Okay can you please let us know what it says how to handle this situation, did United handle correctly? I know they said you can offer up to $1300 cash but does not sound like United did that only offered vouchers? But again I don't know that is why I am asking.

Those vouchers are a pain to use, too. There's a reason people don't take them

You gotta agitate for the cash, normally they expect you to take the vouchers like a chump.

They usually start with vouchers. Often they start low and raise the offer up if no one takes it. What was odd to me was that he was on the plane - normally they know this in advance because 151 people checked in for a flight with 150 seats. They generally handle this before boarding. I would have been furious if they tried to kick me off the plane.

Cash offers are pretty rare although they actually are required to give you them by law. They just expect you to be a sucker and take it.

Honestly, they ought to mandate that you get paid cash to begin with. The average person getting bumped has no status/great frequent flier record (for obvious reasons) so the value of the voucher to the average person getting bumped is pretty weak.

So if it is the law that they give cash this is going to get pretty ugly for the airline since they only offered vouchers.

Generally, they can offer you whatever they want. If you accept less than the legal minimum that is your choice. If you sign papers saying you want a refund and a bag of peanuts, that's a contract.

Most people don't know what the legal minimum is, so they try to con you into less.

The counter to this is that I believe there is nothing stopping airlines from offering more than the legal mandate. If they offered $2,000 cash I bet someone would have walked off the plane.

Looks like some folks are trying to smear the good Dr. Evidently he has a record has lost his license and a convicted pill pusher.

Was he doing anything illegal at the time he was thrown off the plane? There were probably all sorts of bad ombres on that plane. Makes it easier to not feel sorry for the guy but you make it sound like he deserved it,.

While I absolutely think this should have been settled with a buyout offer, it is the airlines prerogative to kick you off for any reason. The guy should have complied rather than resisting. I don't think they were overbooked but had a need arise for those seats and it is their right to revoke them. He has as much responsibility for being abused as anyone. It definitely should have been settled differently but the airline and police are in the right legally. He will likely retire very comfortably now though. Wish it would have been me.

I would be careful with claiming they were in the right legally for multiple reasons.

It is also not their prerogative to kick you off for any reason. A ticket is a contract. They have contractual obligations.
