Black Team defeats Gold Team 34-7 in Third-Annual @mizzouwrestling Black & Gold Dual

#TigerStyle Wrestling opens regular season Nov. 20 at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Black team defeated the Gold team, 34-7, in the third-annual Mizzou Wrestling Black & Gold Dual on Thursday at the Hearnes Center. Head coach Brian Smith's roster competed in 21 matches, 38 total wrestlers, in front of a dedicated crowd of #TigerStyle fans.

Two Tiger grapplers picked up pins in the dual. Junior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.) picked up the first fall of the night in the second period against freshman 157-pounder Seth Pesek (Gardner, Kan.). The score was 14-4 when Cox recorded the fall. Freshman heavyweight James Romero (Atrisco, N.M.) picked up the second and final pin of the night in the match immediately following Cox's. Romero pinned redshirt senior heavyweight Mike Monaghan (Darien, Ill.) in the first period of the match.

In addition to the falls, three Tigers picked up technical falls while three marked major decisions in their matches. Junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.), redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.), and redshirt senior 141-pounder Le'Roy Barnes (Belton, Mo) all recorded technical falls. Mayes' technical fall was 18-3 over freshman 157-pounder Austin Eveler (Lee's Summit, Mo.). Lewis and Barnes' technical falls were 15-0 over freshman 165-pounder Taylor Watkins (Columbus, Kan.) and freshman 141-pounder Kevin Kissane (Wichita, Kan.), respectively. Senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.), freshman 184-pounder Jayden Bears (Staley, Mo), and redshirt junior 141-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) all recorded major decisions.

Mizzou begins the regular season on Nov. 20 when #TigerStyle visits Edwardsville, Illinois, to wrestle Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
