Marshall's senior kicker Romario Monroy booted a 31-yard field goal with under 2:00 remaining to give the Marshall Owls (3-6, 2-3) a comeback victory over NCMC foe Kirksville (4-5, 3-2) on a drive that started from their own 1-yard line.
Jaylen Varner fueled the Marshall attack on both sides of the ball. On offense he secured 10 receptions for 152 yards, and had two interceptions on defense--one for a touchdown, and the other sealed the victory on Kirksville's last drive with under a minute remaining.
These two teams were battling all season for the #6/7 seed in the loaded Class 4 district with Platte County, Kearney, Smithville, Excelsior Springs, etc.
Kirksville jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game. Marshall countered with two scores in the second quarter to even it at 14 apiece with just under 5:00 in the half. The final 5:00 saw a long Kirksville touchdown, and then the two teams traded field goals for a 23-17 Kirksville lead at the half.
The Tigers added a short field goal in the third to push the margin to 26-17, but Kirksville would not score again. Varner's INT return for a touchdown closed the deficit to 26-24 after three quarters, and the teams traded punts back and forth before Marshall's 78 yard final drive to put Monroy in position for his 31-yard game winning field goal. Sophomore QB Ben Haug threw for 295 yards in the victory for the Owls, who knocked Kirksville out of sole possession of 2nd place in the NCMC.
