Marshall's senior kicker Romario Monroy booted a 31-yard field goal with under 2:00 remaining to give the Marshall Owls (3-6, 2-3) a comeback victory over NCMC foe Kirksville (4-5, 3-2) on a drive that started from their own 1-yard line.

Jaylen Varner fueled the Marshall attack on both sides of the ball. On offense he secured 10 receptions for 152 yards, and had two interceptions on defense--one for a touchdown, and the other sealed the victory on Kirksville's last drive with under a minute remaining.

These two teams were battling all season for the #6/7 seed in the loaded Class 4 district with Platte County, Kearney, Smithville, Excelsior Springs, etc.

Kirksville jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game. Marshall countered with two scores in the second quarter to even it at 14 apiece with just under 5:00 in the half. The final 5:00 saw a long Kirksville touchdown, and then the two teams traded field goals for a 23-17 Kirksville lead at the half.

The Tigers added a short field goal in the third to push the margin to 26-17, but Kirksville would not score again. Varner's INT return for a touchdown closed the deficit to 26-24 after three quarters, and the teams traded punts back and forth before Marshall's 78 yard final drive to put Monroy in position for his 31-yard game winning field goal. Sophomore QB Ben Haug threw for 295 yards in the victory for the Owls, who knocked Kirksville out of sole possession of 2nd place in the NCMC.

This has been a very crazy week and it isn't over yet. Once the playoffs begin, though, the cream has a funny tendency to rise to the top. Wouldn't want to be Kearney's opponent next week.

Now official Kearney will host Kirksville next Friday. If they win will host Platte County due to head-to-head victory. If K wins that they would go to Smithville. Platte County would host the Warriors again due to that improbable comeback last month. What a district..........

Wouldn’t Smithville play Kirksville since Kirksville was higher than Marshall but Marshall won the head-to-head?

No Smithville will definitely face Winnetonka. As I read it because Kirksville had the better record and they are not playing one another they remain #6 and go to Kearney while Marshall will now visit Platte County. I will double check, though, once the actual district tourney brackets are announced likely tomorrow or Sunday.

Wrong Again. #1 PC will play #8 Winn, #2 Smithville will play #7 Kville, #3 Kearney will play # 6 Marsahll

Automatic Switch: Two Consecutive seeds (4-5, 6-7, 1-2) who have played head to head. If two teams have played head-to-head and their seeds are consecutive they will be switched if the lower seed has beaten the higher seed (for example, the #2 seed beats the #1 seed head to head; they will be switched). Once a switch has been made, that team is protected from being switched again (for example, the #1 seed cannot be switched with the #3 seed in example above). This process will start from the higher seed and work down through each seeded position

Sorry dude I couldn't even get MSHSAA until after 2 AM and was worn out. They didn't have the brackets out yet. Wow you seem so anxious to point out anything I say/do wrong. Never claimed to be anything approaching perfect, dude.

Platte County plays Tonka, Smithville plays Kirksville, Kearney plays Marshall.
This is why I have to wait until these brackets are out and sites announced (can be Monday sometimes) before charting my next contest. I did, however, think the head to head is in effect only when the records are the same. This of course changes everything. Looks like K and Smithville are all but assured of rematching in the semis.
