The year was 1995, the team was Mexico Bulldogs.........Mercy... C =()~
I saw a good half dozen of their games. And my answer to that would be...a freaking ton. That team, at home (or in Hearnes for that matter), with the Pound and DF, is absolutely the most exciting MO HS basketball team I've ever seen. They were so much fun to watch.Any idea how many dunks they had that year?
saw them play twice in columbia.. most entertaining high school team i have ever seen. They were a run away freight train that year and one of the most exciting high school teams to ever play in the state of missouri. Second place is the performance Tyler Hansborough put on at state - specifically the beast show he had vs vashon. Loved it. The fans from the V were tossing full sodas onto the court in frustration.I saw a good half dozen of their games. And my answer to that would be...a freaking ton. Thompson's lob to Brookins off the glass against Borgia. Wow.
Can you give a roster and some stats for their starters? I was 10 at the time
I know it was the Cookie Belcher team (Nebraska)
Any of the other ones go play college ball?
could you put their numbers with the guys...? Thanks for the post. Really fun.YDKM....
Cookie Belcher 6-4, 11- Nebraska. Europe pro. Now coaches private school in FL.
Jason Brookins 5-11, 12 - NFL. Brookins played bb only his senior year, all-state..
Jerrod Thompson 5-9, 11 - Columbia College.

Back then our city TV taped every game and showed em a couple days later with
the KXEO radio broadcast voice, purdy cool. The team averaged 9 dunks PG for the season and packed the house at every game. This team is responsible for us building our new Mexico Sports Complex, open in 97...

Just for kicks to add to this post, I was at this quarterfinal game the same year. Hoops was really, really good in MO at that time.
I remember that 3rd place game too. If memory serves, it tipped at 9 or 9:30. Both teams slept through the first half. Remember talking to one Sikeston fan who had driven up for the semi, drove back home, then got up at something like 4am and got on the road for the 3rd place game. Lol. I lived about 3 mins from Hearnes back then and barely could get there for the tip.I always heard about this game. That year was Sikeston's first time to reach the final four. We held a 13 point lead on vashon but blew it and lost in the final seconds. Ended up playing KC Central for 3rd and lost 68-66 on Hood's tip in with 5 seconds left. Finished 4th smh
for some reason I thought Jack Bush had passed...who from Kansas City that coached am I confusing him with?http://www.kansascity.com/sports/high-school/article12941687.html

I thought he did too. That article is almost two years old.for some reason I thought Jack Bush had passed...who from Kansas City that coached am I confusing him with?
Traffic was tough in Columbia back then...I remember that 3rd place game too. If memory serves, it tipped at 9 or 9:30. Both teams slept through the first half. Good grief...How good were the teams and games back then? There was a pretty solid 5-7 yr run, and the games and atmosphere was actually really fun.We got the shaft on start times in our first ever final four. Our first semifinal game against Vashon was at 9 a.m. on Friday. We lost a close one. Had to get up the next morning to play KC Central. I believe that one tipped off at 8:30. I mean sheesh. We fell behind like 20-5 in the first quarter. Our coach made it a point to play everybody on the team in the first quarter and that's what you're going to get lol. Somehow we crawled back into it and had the lead late but couldn't hold on. The talent on KC Central was unreal. I believe Hood had 30 and 20 in their semifinal loss to St. Charles West. Ryan Robertson hit two free throws to win it with like a second left. I believe there was some controversy on the foul call.

I had a pretty good view of the Troy/Mexico game that year for the championship of the Troy Tournament. Came out and saw Cookie guarding me and thought, "uh, oh, it's gonna long night for me." Things turned out ok for us that night as we dealt them their only loss of the year.
If memory serves, they got beat at home that year by Rock Bridge. I was at that game, and pretty sure it was the year they won state.Mexico actually lost three games that year. Not sure who the other two were. Plus they didn't have brookins but maybe half the season. Their toughest game during the playoff run was against Berkeley. They won in overtime in the quarterfinals. Semifinal against Borgia was a rout. Then the championship game against maryville was a classic but Mexico pulled away late.
'95 was the year that Borgia beat Charleston in the quarterfinals on a last second half court shot by Josh Hotz. The following year, Charleston beat a Cookie Belcher led Mexico team in Columbia in the semifinals and went on to win the championship. Charleston was led by future SLU player Jeramy Biles at PG and forward Rashad Oliver (son of Ricky Frazier). The Mexico/Borgia semifinal is one of my favorite high school games I've ever attended. I had a lot of Mexico fans and I would say it was one time a team lived up to their hype!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Do you have the game when Mexico played Charleston for the state championship in 1996? I'm working on a documentary and would love any footage
