Look at the chart

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...ns-in-america-to-really-believe-it/?tid=sm_tw[/QUOTE

Take all the gang related shootings and suicides out of that chart and it would look a lot different.

I would be all in favor of life in prison for anyone using a gun or knife in the comission of any crime. Violent people cant be rehabilitated we need to just lock them away and toss away the key.

But we cant do that because most of the people sentinced would be young blacks and thats discrimating against them.

Guys, this is sad. I am really hurt by the insane idiots that do these kind of things. My prayers are with the families of the victims.

That being said, what can we do to prevent this kind of thing from happening again? I truly do not know. I fear it is a problem with no easy answer.

Take away guns, the liberals say, that will not help, as then only the law abiding citizens will comply, leaving the criminals with guns.

As NM said, it is not computers that are the problem, but the way people USE computers that sometimes can be bad. Same thing with guns, guns are not bad, but some people that use guns are bad.

What is the answer?

Computers enable young girls to be sold into sex slaves everyday, but no one wants to ban them, people are killed everyday in car wrecks, but no one wants to ban them.

Why are guns different?

Take a tool of protection away from the law abiding citizen because some criminals use that tool in a illegal way ???

I don't know what the answer is. It is a sad state of affairs.

Why are guns different? Really?
Used as intended, computers make us more efficient, entertain us, and help us communicate.

Used as intended, guns kill.

You have to take a driver's test, have your car inspected, register your vehicle, and have auto insurance. But Daddy can buy unstable, racist, drug using, numbnut a gun for his B-day and everything is hunky dorey to you. Pray for the families, my azz. No you don't.

Where in my post do you get the idea everything is hunky dorey to me?

I truly hate when this happens, and would love to solve the problem.

I just don't think taking protection from law abiding citizens is the answer. There is no possible way to remove guns from society, you would just take away guns from responsible, law abiding citizens, and the bad guys would still have theirs.

You sure are hateful this early Duck, your insult is uncalled for.

You're gonna disenfranchise me by requiring me to take a test to get a gun. I cannot drive to the test. Stop trying to hold back rural white America!

Any type of gun control now is like trying to put the genie back in the bottle. Millions of guns are already in circulation and the constitutional right to bear arms has led to the poliferacation of gun violence. It is impossible at this point to keep guns out of the hands of lunatics and criminals. We made our beds, now we have to sleep in them.

Duck, if you lived 35 minutes from the nearest police station and 18 minutes from the nearest organized town. In an area that has had meth labs from time to time.(But ultimately a good community). 12 minutes from the nearest major highway. Would you not have a gun at the ready just in case? How long do you think it takes for the first responders to show up(if they can find the place)? I don't care if it shows that 99% of home invasions are meant to not be violent, I'm not risking it. The other 1% ends up with the home owner tied up and burned alive in their house, or killed with a hammer. No thank you.

5 minutes from the nearest highway, and 10 minutes from the nearest organized town, with a police station, with one part time cop. Yes I did live in an area like that for a year, and no I did not have a gun at the ready!

Yeah I can see how 10 minutes to the nearest station is pretty similar to that of 35 minutes.....................

That's your choice. Nobody ever claimed you were top of the class.

I don't think there is anything wrong with you owning a gun.

States rights zealots just go crazy over the Federal government dictating anything. How about we let each state and community decide how they "regulate their militia"?

I had neighbors (had) named Bob and Ellen Sheldon lived in a nice old place outside of Carthage, they were in their 80's. Didnt show up for church on a Sunday morning.

Family went to check on them and found a gruesome scene, both of their parnets mutilated in the home.

The night before they had been to a Saturday evening church dinner, when they came home apparently two young men were waiting in the house to murder and rob them, and they didnt just kill them it was beyond that.

Thing is Bob had been a retired deputy for many years and taught concealed carry classes, for some reason he didnt have his weapon on him and didnt stand a chance protecting his wife and himself against two young men. He probably didnt think he needed to be armed going to church. He was wrong and it cost him and his wife their lives.

I live farther out of town than they did and way back off of the road, and you might as well forget about cops getting out here within 30 minutes. I dont plan on EVER making the mistake Bob did and it costing us our lives.

Thankfully one of the guys who did it opened his mouth and they were caught, one of them hung himself with a nice new piece of rope that someone smuggled him into his jail cell. The other pled guilty and is in prison for life.

John Stewart made a pretty good point last night about how as a country we will go 'to the ends of the earth' and spend trillions and trillions to keep safe from foreign persons. (That's the stated reason some people believe)

But we don't do much to protect ourselves from each other.

For whatever reason.

I'd like to point out how Fauxnews tried to make this a religion issue where it was racial from the get-go. Did they hope the guy was a closet Muslim?

Nothing stopping them from doing that right now.
They just cant screw with the "Rights OF THE PEOPLE to keep and BEAR Arms" thing

Why do so many of these mass shootings seem to happen in places were guns are not allowed or not usually carried?

Does it really matter? Drop could pull up beside you at a stoplight and end your life and it wouldn't matter if you were carrying or not. This kid sat there in their Bible study for an hour before he started shooting. If we are going to allow druggy lunatics to access guns we aren't safe.

Do you think he would have went in there to kill these people if he knew there was a good chance half of them were carrying handguns?? I have never heard of a mass shooting at a gun show or firing range :)

I have no problem with people owning guns, I do have a problem with guns with a clip holding 30 bullets that people say the want for hunting(BS).

Stupid gun policy or stupid people? It will never be the utopia that you libs want to turn it in to.
Funny, those socialist utopias overseas don't have our gun violence.

The simple fact is that the irrational love we have for guns in America is generally disastrous policy that results in more deaths and more injuries.

Do you have any idea what it would cost to put as many people in jail forever as you're thinking about? And the impact this has on their children and communities?

America's love with incarceration is failed policy driven by good intentions. There's a reason the right and left are coalescing around prison reform - our policy is terribly expensive.

Again, the core problem with gun violence in America is not mass shootings - making gun laws based upon them is going to result in very bad policy in many cases. The average gun death or gun injury occurs in a one or two off situation where having a concealed weapon really doesn't do much for you or anyone else, or it is a suicide where those laws are irrelevant.

The easy access to guns, especially handguns, is a direct cause of our higher homicide rate.

Yep. This would help in some cases. Although I'm not sure this was meaningful in this case - the reports show that the killer reloaded ~5 times.

Thanks NM I was going to ask why other counties don't have this problem. Not sure but I would guess that a little research on gun violence would show the good ole USA leads the league. Not sure why that would be the case!

Other countries DO have the problem. They left all violent countries off of the chart. IF you look at homicides per 100 people and include all countries the USA isnt even close to the top of the list
