What are everyone’s thoughts (especially coaches) on lifting the morning of game day?

A google search had most sources staunchly against it, with only a few defending (and none that I could find who were staunchly in favor of it).

Even the ones who defended it said to keep it light (but then, what’s the point?).

Thanks!

I dont think lifting on game day is a good idea, you gotta keep you players fresh! Plus, the chances of injury are there. I also dont recommend your players walking to school in the rain on game day. Give em a ride! What I do recommend on game day? Pep rallies and crowd roaring speeches!!

Depends on who is lifting and how you define lifting! Leave it to the man that works with them everyday to make the decision on the what and how much.
Generally, they're teenagers, they will recover by the time they carry their 90 pound backpack and sit down in history class. Think long term. For example, a freshman or sophomore needs to lift no matter what, for the goal is to be your strongest during Junior Senior year. Do math, chemistry and teachers give students a break because of a game? Heck no. Keep the routine of bidness as usual. The little darlings can handle it. Stress is good. Makes you stronger.
Playing basketball is far more risky. Hide the balls, they attract idiots.

Should be some good responses from the Lamar faithful. I'm not close enough to know specifics, but I'm quite certain they lift on game days. And heavy. Even to the point of showing up early to lift heavy, prior to boarding the bus for a long drive on a Saturday morning.

Lifting releases endorphins, testosterone, muscle growing hormones, and gets the blood flowing throughout the entire body. Anytime you can stimulate your muscles and put them into a growth mode where they are working I think it is beneficial. Consistency and being smart in regards to game day lifting is the key.

Football team wise, I'm more concerned with losing strength during the season. Some of my strongest kids still make gains during the season if they 1) Eat 2) Rest 3) smart workouts. I use a formula and crunch numbers on Mondays to evaluate or get a feel of how hard to condition them whether it be in weight training or drills. I picked it up from Finnish dude. It's typically pretty close to a big picture feel for when I need to back off or add some load.

A 40 minute lift will not hurt the kid one bit. You win with kids that love to lift and you lose with kids that don't. My 2 cents

To be clear (since some of you know where I am and that I have kids of my own), I nor my kids have been asked to do this (lift on game days...)

I’m just asking out of pure curiosity for input from a group of people whose opinions I respect (for the most part ;))

Absolutely lift light on game day. It’s a great day to hit the arm farm or do a little bit of light dead lift, not trap bar dead lift but straight bar. Never do legs unless it’s light plyo work. Also I absolutely would not stretch hard on game day, just do plyos and light explosion drills before the game. Stretching tires your players, I know I’m going to get murdered for this but in 20 years you won’t see teams in circles doing hammy stretches after half time you will see them doing butt kicks and bounds to fire up the muscles they are going to use instead of stretching out there fast twitch fibers.

There is maybe 10 high school athletes on the planet that need to stretch so they won’t blow something out. Otherwise just warm up

And I would second the dude who said they are in high school and will no doubt recover by game time. They recover like freakin super hero’s compared even to dudes in there mid 20’s

I want to know what Neosho’s wrestlers do for workouts l, many years they all look like Greek gods, even the kids that aren’t great wrestlers. And I understand most good wrestlers have that good physique but these young dudes are jjjjjjjacked.
