Finally got to watch the Kearney Dawgs and let me tell you, they are impressive. Best Kearney D I’ve seen in years and the offense is much better than last years. That staff is doing an amazing job and I think a state title run is eminent this year.

I have taken a two week break from them but will attend the Grain Valley home game this next Friday. They definitely pass my eye tests (stated this right out of the gate this year) but gotta avoid those key injuries. Depth is my only real concern as I have seen the QB improve as the season has gone on (another concern going into 2018).

As for projecting beyond next week not doing that. The Smithville game to close the regular season still promises to be very competitive unless the Warriors let last night's collapse affect their confidence. The district is loaded again so no predictions about any of that just yet..............

Another thing I’ve been told by my Kearney friends is they have a new offensive line coach this year. Guess he’s made a big difference in what they are doing this year.

Do you think this Kearney team rivals the Jones era teams?
Yes. I have messaged several during games this reminds me of his best teams. The one thing, though, that Jones teams had I haven't quite seen YET is an innovative, unpredictable offense that makes you defend the entire field. This Friday's opponent is not bad at all so will be very interested to see how they operate after going to other games the past two weeks.

Agree. VASTLY improved from last year. I was very surprised and not in a good way how the lines both sides of the ball looked in 2017. From that I knew they weren't going to go far at all. Fingers crossed they keep it going and avoid those key injuries.

Wow high praise from you top. I respect your opinion on here. I’m from the Bill Skillman and Mark Thomas era so I’m glad the tradition will continue under a new staff. Last year was hard to watch at times but it seems this year they are rolling.

First years are always dicey for new HCs and staffs so I kinda airmailed last season. The second year is usually way more telling and the news is good so far. Waaaay back when I was in HS we had no tradition at all were just glad to compete with the better teams in first the KCI then MRVC. That all changed when Skillman became HC. Still vividly remember many great, fun games in particularly 1986-1988-1989. #1 for me those years was the long trip down to then superpower Camdenton in 89, a 35-27 Dogs win. The Thomas era speaks for itself. My favorite game in his stint here was actually a bad looking loss to Park Hill in 2001. The Trojans were a TREMENDOUS team but a group of then unknown Sophs actually made a game of it for awhile. It was that night I knew this program was about to experience something special.............

Top, I love the history being an old history teacher. Wresting was my main sport but I’ve always been a big fan of football.

If depth is an issue as you say, Owen will earn his money as the athletic trainer keeping them healthy!

Keamey missing the X factor...usually have needed a couple D1 athletes that have pushed them over the top.
I actually think they have one on each side of the ball (Connery and Mordecai). The key is keeping them BOTH healthy because everything will change should they lose either.

I was also a little concerned with what I saw on special teams the other night. May have been a one week speed bump but it wasn’t the normal Kearney special teams.

So I'm fairly new to this forum, but have been following HS football in KC metro for years. Top I dont think this team is better than Jones top 2 or 3 teams in his tenure at Kearney. But this years defense would keep them in the game for sure.

hfcdawg you mention the trainer. Back in my day it was just rub some dirt on it, but maybe your onto something. Kearney has been good in several sports for many years now, maybe that plays a bigger role than we think.

Anyways, Kearney has a shot at winning a title this year, but must make improvements based on 3 games I have seen. Cut down on penalties is one of the big things.

Shhh...according to the webbtrolls, they are "average." Keep it on the down low.

Kearney can't and won't win the title game. Speed is their kryptonite, and Ladue has a lot of it. Ladue will beat kearney in the championship by 14.
