Kearney 20 Smithville 19

Kearney won the game despite getting out-gained 395 to 195. K took advantage of opportunities when they needed to most. I'll tip my cap to them and the coaching staff for getting it done. However, I'm confused about all this track speed Joey keeps talking about. I guess the Smithville QB should go out for track this Spring.

All those yards yet they only crossed the 50 yard line three times. I wouldn’t be talking too much about speed when they let a discus thrower score of 49 yard touchdown? But when you have a state championship track team even your discus throwers are fast, I guess?

Isn't it great to live in a community where little boys still like to get outside and play instead of doing video games????? The numbers when the little ones came out before the game were beyond impressive so YES this program is very well stocked.

As for your other statements AMEN, Joey! Kearney is "in the mix". All any fan should ever ask from any team/program..............

Good win for the K

It was a tipped ball that could have been easily intercepted, was a HUGE break for Kearney. Not sure speed had anything to do with that. How many 1st downs did Kearney have in first half?

Enough to win the game. There were a lot of huge breaks for Smithville in the first half--how come they didn't pull away? Come on, lets hear the excuses...

Second half. K with two possessions, and two TDs. Once they got the lead with 19 min left in the game, they never gave it up.

That was cute going for two at the end. Even if the QB lays it in, #34 was going to lay 22 out anyway.

Where's all those guys that squat "500 pounds" at?

True statement. They got too cute with the play-calling on the 3 yard line. You've run for over 300, why not give that a shot to get 3 yards?

Kind of like the choke-fest in the playoffs a few years ago against Helias. I think I threw my shoe at the TV for the coach calling that sweep or whatever, that would have iced the game, when he should have just gone off tackle again, and they would have won the game. Instead, they let Helias win. Sad.

Never underestimate a play-caller's ability to outsmart themselves.

Last year's St. Mary's lost similarly to Neuqua Valley and ended up being compared to CBC. Not saying K or anyone else doesn't have a chance (haha try telling this coaching staff anything approaching that I dare anyone) but don't discount the Dragons, Joey.

You guys carry these teams over like they are the same team from the previous year. Last year Neuqua Valley was ranked much higher and this year Luthern is projected to win over St. Mary's. Last year St. Mary's won 57-12 over Lutheran. Who was a very good highly ranked team last year.

That one hasn't been played yet, Joey. Nobody said St. Mary's is gonna beat Kearney-Smithville-Center-Nevada et al 56-6 just that they are still the favorite in this class as of today.

After hanging right with a very good Troy Buchanan I must agree. We also don't know about West Plains but should learn more Week 5 hosting Camdenton and for sure when conference favorite Lebanon comes calling.
I would put money on WP being in the top 6

At the same time, Hannibal is completely under-rated.
i definitely agree, Hannibal is under-rated, Hannibal should be ranked 5th or 6th. Hannibal kept up with troy and a lot of us really don't know how good Helias is, we find out when Helias host Cardinal Ritter friday night. Hannibal only lost by 10 Points against Helias in week 1. Helias only Losses from last year was to Hannibal and C5 Runner up Holt

Can't wait to see the rematch. This time with K at Full Strength, unlike the last time.
Being impartial I am also looking forward to seeing Smithville after K appears to have awakened them. All I can tell anyone planning to attend is ARRIVE EARLY. Parking is a big issue this year.

Here is another little nugget provided form holds in Excelsior tonight: Kearney is well served not peeking ahead to Smithville too much if the Tigers come calling a second time. BLOWOUT REMATCHES have, as posted last night, an eerie way of being lots closer the second time around in the playoffs. On paper should not happen but (not to open old Raytown wounds just stating facts) the first two Minnick years at Raytown they lost in the opening round to winless Ruskin whom the Blue Jays blew out badly in the regular season plus the next year lost to Belton who was 2-8 coming in and had similarly lost in a major regular season blowout.

Again just being impartial and throwing this out there................

With the Bulldogs at full strength, it will be a 35 point spread over ES by half, or more. It really just comes down to personnel and mismatches. The TE is completely healthy now--had two TDs in the last game and they hardly threw to him. When they did he torched them. The wide-outs are a mismatch as well. I suppose they will toy with them in the running game for a while, who knows? ES has no passing game. And K is much improved since the last time versus the run. ES is well coached and the kids are good. They just need more. But they are near the bottom of C4 size-wize.

Again on paper I totally agree just tellin' ya I've seen lots and lots of these shockers over the years. Funny bounces of the ball. Key calls that go the other way. WEATHER. One thing that will, I would hope, help K big time is what happened last week. They may well have gotten this out of their systems. Time will tell.

I like your point about the star TE. K needs to hold nothing back and not just running that wildcat. Those backs are punishers and sneaky fast and elusive. As I said it is a matter of Kearney not taking Excelsior lightly (if they even play) and peeking ahead to Smithville who should be all over Van Horn next Friday night.

Open space & running room = pain

Yes, K's #2 TB didn't even play #1 was hurt and only got 4 touches, on Round 1...see my face below...

I don't nearly know about that one have a suspicion you are digging at Joey. St. Mary's, for my money, still the very solid favorites in C4.
I think he’s just butt hurt that Kearney won another state championship today, up to 20 state championships now in all sports.

Four just from football. That’s almost as many have been won by a neighboring town and all sports put together.

I think envy is one of those deadly sins right?

Not sure where Love the Game is from but he has definitely digged at me and our town before on more than one occasion.

What happened in the Smithville game? I thought they were a pretty powerful ball club, but they beat a usually weak East Kansas City squad by only 2 scores. Does anyone have any insight?
