The potential for long term deterrent is unlikely. It may work out that the cost of this is not worth it.
The calculation made by terrorists should always be a decision to this short term question. Will we die if we kill US troops? It's not that hard.
Pompeo just said “Americans in the region are much safer today”.
That’s obviously not true. We are immediately evacuating all Americans from Iraq.
At this perilous moment, the Administrarion must be truthful about what they did and the consequences.

This is a deterrent to avoid further escalation throughout the region. Remember the terrorist attacked the US Embassy. It's not this hard. Every time Trump farts the Dems, media freak out. He is not God.

Yes, we should be on high alert and harden our soft targets. Yes, we should hope that we have a long term strategy. Yes, we should have a contingency plan before they lash out by being prepared in the case of likely targets. This is the only strategy that will deter. In five years when Iran steps across the border to Saudia Arabia with nuclear weapons then it will be very hot indeed.

Imagine if Trump had left the Obama Iranian deal in place? The Obama administration strategy was to continue to allow billions upon billions of dollars to flow into Iran so the Ayatollah could strengthen his terrorist cells, make more ballistic missiles and create nuclear weapons. Is this a grown-up strategy?
