Whether the quarterback is positioned in the pocket or outside the tackles when he throws the ball and if the pass makes it back to the line of scrimmage are totally IRRELEVANT at the high school level. At the high school level, if you intentionally throw any pass to avoid a loss of yardage with no eligible receiver in the area, it is intentional grounding. Except when spiking ball to kill clock in hurry up situations.

Great explanation. There are many HS white hats who get this call wrong or simply do not call it.
