I miss the "old days" as well... Here's hoping that we have some football to argue about this coming fall.

I mean if you want to argue about football.........We could talk about how the spread offense has ruined every aspect of the game that we know an love.......

I have watched Super Bowl 3, 12, 13. Namath's release and accuracy were bad ass. He would have a field day in today's NFL. Randy White from the Cowboy's in those two Super Bowls was an absolute beast...Bosa/Reggie White impact on the SB's. The Steeler's/Cowboys Super Bowl was sensational. Amazing long passes. Turnovers...34-31 with two teams that were in 4 Super Bowls on and 8 year span. More HOFs on the field than you can believe.

Those Steeler/Cowboy SB's remain my favorites, and I had no skin in the games. They just seemed 'bigger'.

I'm one of the 1 in 50 million or whatever who got it... Sucks.. but all I have now after 8 days is shortness of breath and no stamina. Pretty well the same crap you deal with when you hit the big 60.. Wife is showing a little compassion (unbelievable) and the kids, grandkids tested negative. Employer is allowing me to work at home so hopefully I will have this behind me and be ready to tackle turkey season in a couple of weeks. A friend of mine who caught it from his wife is currently at SE Hospital at Cape with IV's stuck in him and on oxygen. This stuff can get mean. Please keep your families safe.

Glad you're doing well with it. I hope your friend can make a full and quick recovery. Did you experience a fever at all?

But shortness of breath and no stamina? How would anyone know if Bosko even had it!?!?

Are you finding any? I’ve checked my dozens of spots and scoured up two little ones

I found a dozen in Reynolds County this past weekend. Some BIG reds but I never eat those. Almost ran over four with the lawnmower....

I had a bout towards the end of Feb into March that knocked my socks off. All symptoms line up. I have no evidence of course, but I wouldn’t be one bit surprised.

I told the wife this....We went to Disney over Christmas break(Let me tell ya, it is NOT the happiest place on earth during that time. Come to find out it is the most crowded on New Years Day). Flew back January 3rd and about January 7th I was knocked out with a low grade fever and cough. I had pneumonia as a middle school aged kid that put me in the hospital for awhile. It seemed alot like that. I still wake up with a cough every morning, three months later. I wasn't the only one at work to get it either, plus my kids showed the same, but lesser symptoms. Who knows, it could of been any of the other 219 or so viruses humans can get. But everything lines up....

Hope ya feel better! If you need somebody to check on the well being of your turkeys let me know. ;)

Ah, good to know I'm not the only one that feels impacted by a touch of the rona every now and then. I never had fever or shortness of breath, but minor headache and dry cough are symptoms occasionally.

Day 9 and I feel like the old Shorty. Wife wants me to help with landscaping in the yard but I'm going to play the shortness of breath deal for another 3 or 4 days.... What she don't know wont hurt her...Thanks for your kind words men. Really never had anything in my life that I actually questioned my mortality. It was humbling mainly because of my lack of knowledge and the unknown's. Ready for life to go on... Turkey season is a biggie to me. However, the love of the game called football will always be #1.

I'm a radio sports director, responsible for a local sportscast and a national sports cast 6 days a week. Just a lil stressed lol

With it warm the next couple days them mushrooms should be popping up

@RawMeat do you know much about timing of floods and how it affects with the following years morel crop?

The place I usually find a few grocery bags of morels has been zilch so far...It floods almost every year anymore(not sure what happened if the Corp changed their hold back or what), last year we had a late spring into early summer flood....

In those areas you would find morels, did the flood knock out any trees? Living or dead? Was there any soil loss due to the flood?

After 25 years of seriously researching the fruiting patterns of Morchella esculenta, I have derived only two undeniable conclusions:
1. There is a God
2. I’m not Him
But w
*Shoot asks a good question, methinks. Much has to do with their source of nutrition

I think the weather has more to do with the low fruits thus far. Normally, I look for three + consecutive days of weather in the 70’s with nighttime temps in the 50’s. Rain during this time helps.
In our county, We’ve had 50’s jumping to 90f with no recent rain.
Thing is, they’re up, but minuscule and under the leaf litter. This weather could screw them up until next spring.
If you’ve got a black morel spot (Morchella elata, in case you care), I’d hit those first. They tend to pop before the whites and grays.
Good luck and keep up posted. I’m going out now...
Morels are funny. People swear by creek bottoms, by hill tops. By southern facing slopes, east facing, west facing. The best trees are elms. Ashes. Cedars. Oaks. Poplar. Sycamores.
Bottom line is I think they’d colonize about any dying tree root system.

Yeah this is a money spot. But I think I’m getting a pattern that late spring floods affect them more than winter/Summer.

Ofcourse more variables are in play!

Hope you're well Short.

Shrooms are crazy this year. Found a few in March (which never happens), then just a few more since. Have barely had enough for a fry. Several cold days coming up. Then, a warm up. We need to remain diligent.

I did the NFL Game Pass free trial that runs until the end of May. I also caved and bought a PlayStation. Haven’t owned a system since the old Super Nintendo. It’s been a major learning curve. Hope everyone is finding ways to get their fix in a world without a sports.

So I asked about the flood for a few reasons. I've been an avid morel hunter my entire life. While I was an undergraduate at UCM, there was a grad student doing his thesis on fungi. Needless to say, I pricked every corner of his brain at every opportunity. He often called morels the "princess of mushrooms" because they took so many factors before fruiting and will suddenly to stop, if any of these factors move outside the target range. Humidity, soil temps, soil moisture, ambient air temp, etc.

Now back to your flood. Morel spores often target dying or stressed trees, as these are much easier to colonize on. So if that flood killed or straight up removed any trees, that could explain your sudden loss of morels. Also, if there was any major soil displacement or soil deposits due to the flood, that is could be another reason.

If you're looking for new morel spots, look for trees growing where that species of tree shouldnt be growing. My family owns a farm NE of Carrollton and there is a white oak growing at the bottom of draw. That tree has given me 30-40 morels in some seasons.

Fun fact! Red morels AKA false morels, are poisonous and I wouldnt recommend eating them. Some places in the world do eat them but toxicity in red morels can vary. If you do choose to eat them, boil them outside first.

Awesome info! I found one morel while on a Zoom meeting with my grade level team walking a ridge top. At the base of a white oak on a ridge top....the only one at that point.

Gyromitra esculenta, commonly known as false morels, Arkansas morels or big reds are eaten by many people in Missouri. They old timers really seem to love them. They are interesting in that the level of toxin found in them varies from region to region and even from specimen to specimen.
I’ve eaten them once, but didn’t feel good about doing it.
Many mycologists consider them to be deadly poisonous if eaten raw; however, as shoot alluded to, the toxin they contain methyl hydrazine, has an incredibly low boiling point and often is removed during the cooking process.
I can recommend them, although I know many people personally who’ve eaten them every spring for decades.
Remember the old adage: “There are old mushroom hunters and there are bold mushroom hunter. There are no old / bold mushroom hunters.”
That is 100% true. Red morels vary highly in toxicity from region to region and even specimen to specimen. And you are also correct about methyl hydrazine but it can become airborne. So always boil red morels outside.
