Self reflections is the corner stone of good therapy, understanding one's thoughts and emotions that lead to good or bad decisions/actions is very helpful.
The only thing that a person can ultimately control is his/her own actions and decisions. Trying to control other peoples actions and choices is a fantasy that leads to a whole host of mental anguish as those attempts always fail.
Individual People and Groups of people who try and force conformity in a effort to control other people actions and fail usually end up with anxiety and other issues that lead to depression and often dependency to cope with the reality that this is not possible.
As far as therapist that victim shame I have no knowledge of any that do such a thing but it's not out of the realm of possibility. But most good therapist understand that a person is responsible for his/her choices, decisions and behaviors.
As far as recommending a AR-15 as a coping skill for depression, anxiety, or other issues that would be laughable. Recommending a AR-15 for self defense and protection from criminals or a Violent abuser would be prudent and wise, because a restraining order is not worth the paper it's printed on and criminals ignore laws, and relying on LEO to show in a timely manner is a massive gamble.
