Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

It is quite a change how softball scores have evolved to what baseball scores are now.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

I don't reckon I know what you mean.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

Just have observed several "championship" games in high school with much higher scores compared to what they used to be. Much less dominant pitching at 43 feet.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

This was a high school summer league with sophomore pitchers going for both teams and lots of young players on most of the teams. Naylor's senior pitcher and catcher didn't even play for them in this league so I wouldn't use this as a reference. Arkansas has been throwing from 43' for a while now and the pitcher coming to 3R from Jonesboro Westside set a new record for wins in a season. I don't even know how many strikeouts she had but it was a bunch, I think she averaged 8 or 9 a game. The girl whose record she broke was signed by Michigan St. a couple of years ago.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

I agree with old bird on this one. I think 43 feet has made a huge difference in domination by pitchers, which is natural. The girl you are referring to at Jonesboro would have shattered the records she did by a much wider margin had she pitched from 40 ft. They wanted to take away dominating pitchers and have succeeded to a degree. Offense is up quite a bit. The final four was testament to this as well. Not many 1-0 softball games. Heck with the new baseball bats they play with now, baseball scores might even get lower that softball. OFC final last fall at TRCC was a 1-0 extra inning game in baseball.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

Good point LR. Scores are up. Softball game strategy is played much like baseball, bigger innings, less bunting, and not as much "station to station" base advancement. With the bbcor bats your comment about softball outscoring baseball is not out of line.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

You may be right but the high school summer league tournament at 3R is not a very good example of that with 2 sophomore pitchers in the circle and a lot of young players behind them, especially for Naylor.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

3R you a correct in the fact that Naylor's defense was less that sterling to say the least. I do however still contend that even though those girls were soph pitchers, and by the way Bluffs is a Jr, that pitching from 40 ft would have made both of them much harder to hit. Defense is the name of the game in softball now that the state has taken dominating pitching out of the equation to a large degree with the 43 ft.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

If the P.B. pitcher that pitched in the tournament is going to be junior I was given some bad info. Either way she hasn't had much varsity experience. I don't doubt that moving the rubber back 3 feet makes a difference but I'll bet most people like more offense rather than 15 SO's a game. They will pitch from 43' if they go to college so why not get started? In basketball and football the courts, rims and fields are the same from an early age right through high school. The difference in basketball from high school to college is the size of the and the 3 point line court not in the height of the rim or the distance of the free through line.

Re: Final League Standings and First Round Tournament Games

LR according to the article in the paper today about the Lady Mules the pitcher that pitched in the tournament is a sophomore as I was told during the summer league.
