Sounds like someone is upset all those 8th graders didn't pay attention in his English class. Poor guy.

C'mon Mr. Palmer. Rarely do I post on here and I don't live near Kansas City, but I cannot remain silent. The only dog I have in this fight is the fact I've been a teacher and coach.

You are correct, "Meanwhile, in your local public school, the science teacher, the English teacher, the math teacher, and even the history teacher toils away. There’s a good chance one of those English teachers are grading over 100 essays right now or that Math teacher is planning tomorrow’s lesson." Somewhere, specifically in the Northland, there is a football coach who worked his tail off and produced winners, while there is also a writer who experimented with teaching for five years and chose to join the ranks of critics rather than stay in the arena.

Somewhere there are coaches who wait with student athletes until their ride comes and picks them up, be it from a practice or a game. Somewhere there are coaches toiling away over game plans, scouting reports and practice plans. Somewhere there are coaches being questioned by reporters, writers and former teachers who think it's their job to bitterly inform the masses of perceived injustices. The list could continue......

Fairness is not equality. Only eleven players get on the football field at once. If every player had an opportunity to prove why they should be one of the eleven, then it's fair. Fairness is equal opportunity. Mr. Palmer, I contend you had an opportunity to build a world class English department, for four years at one school and one year in middle school at another school. Rather than point fingers, place blame and whine, why don't you get in the arena, work your butt off and make a difference?

There is a simple principle at work here, you reap what you sow. Your seeds of bitterness, skepticism and cynicism will yield a harvest for you, for sure--probably not one you want to store in your silo. A couple of weeks ago, I sat in Section 316 at the Chiefs/Steelers playoff game and heard rumblings about the coaching ability of Andy Reid. The fans in 316 were clueless. Mr. Palmer, come down out of Section 316.

I'll close with the words of Theodore Roosevelt, "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

Just as you argue, "... those teachers who arguably create more long term value for society receive no stipend and are forced into a salary schedule that, ironically, strictly enforces equality in salary," I would argue the lessons, principles and values I discovered from my high school coaches were as valuable and useful as the ones I learned in the classroom.
 
yes, the lessons taught by football coaches is important, but 125,000 with no preps, I teach 7 different preps and coach and I bring home 2,000 a month

If it's this author's contention is to raise awareness that teachers don't make a good salary, I'm ok with that. But America already knows that! His inability to communicate his opinion is based purely on his own approval and has nothing to do with science. He's printing in black letters that football coaches are not worth being paid. Does he know some of the unlucky coaches, who choose to work in the summer, for a free T-shirts and shorts? Let's, take the teacher's salary budget and divvy it up equally. What an idiot. This is socialism. This is just another douche trying divide teachers into small factions to grovel over crumbs. Man vs woman, high school teachers vs elementary, athletic coaches vs teachers only, women's sports vs male sports, band vs art, administrator vs teacher, superintendent vs school board, school board vs small minds, small minds that have ruined our country. We're so divided right now it's scary. Jimmy Carter, who inherited a culture during worst of times, said he's never seen so much division. This article is an example of how.

Math teachers don't risk their children's livelihood teaching math. Neither do Social Studies, English, and the rest of the faculty. There have been more football coaches fired for not winning than a teacher that is awful in the classroom. Forgive us for assuming that Math teachers should know how to teach quadratic equations as pre-requisite to teaching Algebra. Math teachers don't get humiliated in the court of public opinion if Johnny fails to hand in his composition paper. Sure you might have one or two upset parents that Johnny is failing Algebra but the community is not outraged for losing a game because you failed to convert a two-point conversion. Football coaches earn every cent of their money. Thank God some coaches get paid. We impact a community far beyond the 120 young men in our programs.

The genius of the public school system is not the salary schedule, it's the fact that math teachers and physical education teachers earn basically the same salary. You know why? Because some common sense educator realized along the way, the truth that learners who score well on math tests generally are intelligent. Students that are below average can become average. Average aptitude kids can become more average, and above average kids are above average. Test results are based on who you're comparing it too. Does he not realize our Math level scores on a global scale are not too great because we attempt to educate every kid, and they all get tested! The rest is a myth.

Successful football coaches are generally good teachers. Not that there are not exceptions, you can suck as a teacher and still survive a little longer than a football coach. A coaches job security is based on a day to day subjective opinion. The blogger pretends to understand the challenges because he taught in the classroom. In my opinion, this doesn't make him anything more than failed teacher. If you want to be fair then fire all the teachers that suck and replace them with bubbly corporate professionals. There's a difference between fair and equitable, right?

Working your way up the ladder of success is what's this country was built on. Don't give in to this liberal BS. OMG, Some football coaches have literally worked for free and worked there way up. We knew this before we chose our profession. we don't need some sniveling whiner to point out what is best for student-athletes. We paint houses, work part time jobs, mow yards, supplement our incomes with two other sports, so we can use football to teach kids. We live out the principles we want to teach in our individual lives. Thank God we now have a system that values, impactful difference makers, hard work, success, commitment with very little instant gratification. We put the world in college buddy. I'm sorry this guy had to whip out his personal opinion to bring awareness. Go back to your Gender Equality Journalism School and leave our educational system alone,

The basic salary is. They don't publish the extra fees paid for specific duties. For instance, I've seen a coach get paid $55K for teaching. Plust $36,000 for coaching. Maybe they publish it somewhere that I wasn't looking?

Yes, and it's indeed impactful to have a band teacher that is exceptional. If they want more money, they can do like the rest of us. Move on or get a second job. They signed up for it, live with it.
 
I have been, 3 state championship games, i'm glad for him, good to make some money, if he can keep it for 3 years he will have a heck of an retirement, better win

Now I'm doing two things I shouldn't 1) predict games and 2) be a downer. But I predict: 7-5 next year in Class 5. Then LN beats 2 class six teams in 2018. They win 4 tops (by scheduling weak C5 teams.. 2019: They win 5 (3 against C5 teams). Jones goes off in the sunset, to a college in the SEC as coordinator or whatever he can get. They win maybe 13-15 games in the next three years.

Pretty hard to predict how he does until he announce who his staff will consist of! Jones is hands down one of the best there is but he has been blessed with an amazing staff the past 11 years. I don't doubt that his teams will win but how quick he wins hinges on how many coaches he drags out of KMO!

My skepticism has everything to do with factors the coach can't control.
 
Agreed! And there are some pretty darn good coaches over in Blue Springs that want to win pretty bad as well! It will be interesting! I have heard that he only has a few years left before he heads off to the SEC as well.
Probably right after his daughter graduates.
